Gee-- generally speaking, apart from the Aquantive deal, I betcha APPL makes a whole lot more per employee than MSFT.
It pays to 1) hire the smartest people 2) have much better development tools than that other company can even dream of.

Carl,
Nah. Although I like bashing MS as much as the next guy, your reasoning here and on Friday miss the mark...
Your strawmen: hiring those engineers or giving away $$$ would not attain any strategic goal.
The Q really is, did MS add strategic functionality and capability worth $6B to its bottom line?...
So, my Q to you is, "What chance do you think MS has to monetize a cash stream (or chokehold on google) worthy of present value $6B?

Carl's arguement may well have been a bit of a straw man, but it does illustrate the pathology of the decision-making process at MSFT (though they are not the only ones with this disease).
One thing we know: any chance Aquantive may have had to innovate or become relevant is dashed now. It will simply become another failed MSFT stab at "content".
