Animation on the Mac is not all glitz. It definitely helps the user experience ... from knowing that an app is actually launching to knowing where a document minimized.

I think Apple's stock price is getting to your head, hence all the iPhone buzz tracking. Remember a company and stock price are two different things. iPhone will and is just another phone in the sea of mobile phones. iPod competition is coming. "Linux" internet devices are coming.

Google has a trends page which you can get a graph with search trend and news volume. It is not as detailed, but probably gives a better broad picture. Looks like trend since launch is down 50% already.
