Your story or map should have wa y to see availability through the retail AT&T Stores and the Apple Online Store as well as the retail Apple Stores. (I assume the iPhone also is being sold online).

Sadly, neither AT&T nor the online Apple Store publish their availability for me to map. And the AT&T site that claims to provide iPhone availability isn't accurate -- they basically claim that all AT&T stores have iPhones even when they don't; when you get to the store, they simply offer to order you one online.
