Gravatar I think that part of the reason is that making as elegantly as Apple does (when they do it right) is subtle and difficult and subtle and difficult aren't easily encapsulated in the search for next quarter's profit. On the other hand, small companies which can have the time to be subtle and creative don't have the resources to enforce a design standard such as Apple and MS can. Just adding some color or a curved surface to a product doesn't cut it. You need to understand human perception and design to the the user and that is quite difficult.
