Great article. When the aTV came out I was skeptical after seeing the demo at the Apple Store, but when I figured out that I could convert the movies I already own in very high quality - I bought one right away. I love it! I own an HDTV, but could honestly care less about getting a "true" HD picture when you consider what it takes to do that - buying an expensive Blu-Ray player, re-purchasing my existing movies etc. The quality from the aTV is so good, I don't even notice the difference from my upscaling DVD player. The only beef I have with the aTV is the lack of discrete audio channels. I can hear the difference in a movie playing in PL II, and in true 5.1 - but, since you can convert your movies and include all six channels in the Quicktime container, I am hoping that the aTV will sport that capability coming up. So far, 3 friends of mine purchased an aTV after seeing what I was doing with it (essentially throwing out my DVD player)...

No comment about Apple TV.

I think the dual HD-DVD/Blu-ray player will win in the end. In a couple of years, there will be the sub-$99 Hi-def player which supports both formats. That is the difference between Hi-def format war and the previous VHS and Betamax format war.

This time the physical medium are the same size and use the same blue laser. So both formats will be used instead of just one.

Gravatar Your yardstick is up to Jobs' ass, together with your head, Mactard.

Gravatar I agree with you beanie.

What has been done to Apple TV in the past several months? Anything? It seems that the most plausible plan should be to merge it with the Mac Mini or visa versa, IMO. I know of only two people that actually own one, but have several friends with the iPhone. I still have my Treo.
