I'm not sure that hardware is harder than software... but I am sure that it's very different. Manufaturability, durability, variability.... heat! Not issues in software.

Then again, one of the reasons Sony never had a prayer in the mp3 market was no real software competency.

The real takeaway is that experience in one doesn't yield lessons for the other.

Deep core competencies in both is an important part of Apple's secret sauce.
