1995? I was at Stanford during those years, and my impression was that the initial Google website was launched in 1997-1998.
You are in fact right -- it was 1996 when the Google project actually got going. You could use google in those good old days by going to http://google.stanford.edu. But according to Wikipedia, Google.com didn't get registered until 1997, and the company didn't get established until 1998.
