That's strange my G4 mini works fine headless without any hacks. I use it with Apple's ARD VNC server and Chicken of the VNC all the time.
Maybe this is an issue with the Intel minis? Or maybe it needs to be plugged into a display once so some initial value in PRAM is set?

this is great!!!
without the resistor my mac mini had only 800x600 and 1024x768.
now i can choose from 640x480 to 2048x1536. and what is even more important 3D hw acceleration is working.
i am a bit worried if a 100 ohm is too little? i have taken 150. is working, too.

Worked like a charm not more scrambled displays over vnc on the servers I admin.
