I couldn't agree more. For a recent tradeshow, I used Keynote to build a 300MB presentation that I looped for a whole day. No problems at all, and it looked great

Is there any way of pulling database information into Keynote? I'm thinking product information that would key off of a product number. Our sales people would love that!

I imagine it wouldn't be difficult to design an Applescript or Automator workflow to do just that.

On possible explanation on how the gradient rectangles don't line up from machine to machine might be that a G4 PowerBook and a MacBook Pro have different screen resolutions. (MacBook Pros are wider and have a different aspect ratio.) Keynote renders slides for the resolution you are using so if the aspect ratio is different, the point at which you start your cover box will be at a different color in the gradient. You could test this by loading the original presentation on the MacBook Pro and not re-rendering the slides for the larger screen. My guess is they would line up.
Agreed though, Keynote puts an end to death by PowerPoint. It is a bit young though, features like a gradual reveal should be included in the product. I wonder if they read this blog!

I don't know of a way to have Keynote merge database information in a live presentation. You would have to do something like write a script that would extract some database information and then build a document and then have that document added to a Keynote slide. Once there it would remain there.
Probably for security reasons Keynote has limited ability to communicate with other programs.
One exception is the ability to display html code. You could have a link on a slide that would display a web page located on your own hard drive. FileMaker Pro can display data in web pages so this might be a work around.
