This is just another example of our wonderful government at work. You were right in expecting people to do their jobs and do them "right", and I would have expected this little incident to be the last thing on your mind at this time. If we all did our jobs like our government does theirs, we would not have a job to go to. I would have been angry too. It doesn't suprise me though, as I have seen this so much in my Husband's experiences with the National Guard over the years. You ask questions and no one seems to know anything. Either they are lying or there is very poor communication in the military, I don't know which... He is still waiting on his 20-year letter and he got his 20 years in last November. he keeps asking if it has arrived and I keep having to tell him "no".
Did you ever get this matter resolved so that it does not look bad on you?
All I have to say is thank goodness this deployment is about over (in September) and he only has a few more months to attend drills and he is out for GOOD! I can't wait....

I was thinking about writing a letter to the credit reporting agencies to see if anything can be done.

Well the military accountants have to account for every dime in cash and every piece of equipment, so someone his accountable foe everything in their inventory. You know this from a lone career in the service. People have always gotten "screwed" this way and likely always will especially after six plus years of continual combat deployment. However fucked up it is, which is whit I believe because if a soldier signs a contract you become responsible for your pledge. The military needs to do the same in a receptacle way. Remember the four hundred dollars is a pay check you are entitled to keep, be it as it may, it could be worse.
Here are a couple of examples: Back in the first battle in Fallujah there was a Marine who got screwed by getting RPG'ed and losing his arm, his comrades saved him at great risk and woke up in Walter Reed owing something like eight thousand bucks for his helmet and pieces of his body armor which the medic abandoned to dress his wounds. This became a national issue and his Senator got this rectified quickly! Now the NG is trying to keep as much of the extra signing bonuses by keeping as much of the extra signing bones money by prorating ones time of actuarially serving. Such as if you have any family emergency or get wounded. The bastards are very cleaver with trying to save cash which is in very short supply these days. Anyway I understand your annoyance here and perhaps you might write your congressperson or senator.

you should definitely try to get it straight with the credit people. and contacting congresspeople is also a good idea.
you didn't have a choice about going to those drills -- far as you knew, showing up was required. the backdating of your discharge wasn't anything under your control. would someone in your unit be able to confirm that you found out about the discharge at the second drill?
any kind of documentation you have about trying to get this straight will help -- the letters they sent you, any notes you might have, a copy of the check you sent, etc. it is just WRONG for this to have been sent to collection -- especially since you honestly earned the money they decided to take back. and then paid back.

Gawd, I see that my editor was on sabbatical, or just drunk.

I wish I could say that I can't believe how the government has treated you once again, but sadly I CAN believe it. I've lost faith in our government to protect our soldiers.
So sorry you were/are screwed again (and again, and again).
