hi Korinna, yeah I guess it's to each its own, different strokes for different folks. I still prefer the cakey one while my husband doesn't like donuts of any form.
Cool website you have.

I just stumbled onto this looking at the tikoy. I'm from Los Angeles, and here's the thought on Krispy Kreme.
The key to Krispy Kreme is eating them fresh off the line. When you have one of these just baked, they are so nice and fluffy.
I suppose a part of the reward of eating the donuts is also the ability to see the process of the actual baking. It's like watching your grandmother cook, and having the first taste.
I can sit and eat a box of these, my husband wouldn't be happy though.

@Cait: hi there, not a fan of too sweet donuts either. I guess the pastry itself is good but the glaze is just too sweet for me.
@BBLogan: So - Nebraskan and Iowan pastries are good, ha? Thanks for the tip, I'll make sure we check them out if we're in town.
@Sam: LOL! Just like what we get from Tesco! My son loooves them.
@G: Yeah be careful, you might eat the whole box!

My husband and I also think KK is definitely over-rated...even the signature hot glazed donut. We both grew up eating pastries from our home town bakeries in Nebraska and Iowa. Nothing beats them. Since we've moved to the south (US - TN) we've been stumped by the fascination with KK donuts. Even DD is over-rated in that respect. We prefer the non-franchise, made by hand without prepackaged, premeasured, conveyor belt donut over the corporate donut anyday. Homemade and hometown bakery donuts are the best because they've got soul! Plus, they support someone's family instead of some CEO's pocketbook.

The only KK donut I love is the glazed one, but I can only eat one because it is way too sweet & I am normally not a fan of sweet foods! It melts in your mouth & nothing I've ever had at Dunkin Donuts ever came close. As for the other KK varieties, I've only tried one other (like a French cruller type) & I was not impressed at all.

@santos: How true! I do prefer the cakey doughnut over the raised/fried one. Thanks for the comment.
@stellie: Tita, I think I prefer DD over KK but maybe because I like cakey over raised ones. How's the snow situation there? Enough to do halo-halo?
@12: I agree the cakey ones in KK is not so good.
@purplegirl: hi there, I think it's a matter of preference. The raise/fried ones are usually too sweet for me maybe that's why I'm biased to the cakey donuts.

i've been eating KK donuts here in the south (US) since we moved here 20 years ago. so to me, it's no novelty at all. it's like a way of life. i like the fried taste of it, though.
but DD has better chocolate glazed ones. the KK kind is too sweet because they have to sugar glaze it first then glaze it again with chocolate.

hi tita celiak, "never as good as the first time"--sade...when we had it fresh out of the oven in Toronto. it's like $5.99 a dozen at the wholesale store..i can't taste the difference and we feel we have to stay loyal to DD (birthplace is where we live!!!) but we only have that once in a while too because it tastes and feels like trans-fatty-S.I.N.

hi celia
i'm with you on this--i just don't understand what the big deal is. the one particular doughnut that kk built its reputation on is the warm glazed raised one like redfox described, but it's just a warm donut with an unhealthy amount of sugar icing. if you get a doughnut from many places just as they come out of the fryer, it would taste much the same. it's sort of sad, really, that this fatty, sugary lump of dough is a mark of excellence.

The thing that makes Krispy Kremes extra good is that they are made right on the premises, so you can have a HOT DOUGHNUT NOW (as the sign says). A fresh warm plain glazed KK is excellent, which is why it's worthwhile to queue up and get them right on the spot. Day-old KK are fine, but not enormously special. It is not surprising that a box of what looks like KK doughnut holes would taste like Dunkin Donuts.
There are two basic kinds of doughnut dough: "cake" and "raised." The DD kind you liked would be cinnamon cake doughnuts; I think KK may only do raised. Cake doughnuts are sometimes also called "old fashioned."

Krispy Kreme is really good, maybe its just that one? Haha. I'm not sure. I really like Krispy Kreme and here in the States, its kinda pricey, I think the best ones are the fresh ones. But I'm not sure, growing up I had Dunkin Donuts, those were the best, but theres none near by here... D;
