Hi EB, I find tikoy here in UK only in Chinese groceries and only. Unfortunately also, they only sell these during the Chinese New Year season.

Hi! I'm having trouble finding tikoy in the UK. I live in London. Do you know if is is sold year-round or only around Chinese New Year? After a bit of googling, I found out tikoy is also known as "nian gao" but all the pictures showed somethign different. Desperate for this kind of tikoy!! Please help. Many thanks in advance.

i love em we call it "lin kou" here, literally translated to 'new year's cake". my mom prepared it by slicing em up, slicing up some tapioca or any sweet tuber, then put two slices together, dip them in a batter and fry, it's very good!

Hi Annie, thanks for the tip. I've seen that type of cooking tikoy in HongKong. Maybe I'll try it with the last tikoy I have in the fridge.

Belated Gong Xi Fa Cai!!! it's me again. Kayo nalang mag adjsut ng dami ng flour sa beaten eggs. I-adjust nyo rin yung amount ng water. Estimation lang po kelangan. Thank you

My two Chinese friends fried their tikoy differently. They usually prepare a batter not just eggs to dip in the tikoy. Plain flour, and eggs plus water, that all for the batter. Cover the tikoy completely then fry. It won't come out soft unlike with the beaten egg only. Try it.

@Ana: 100%RH !! My goodness, books literally fall apart in that humidity. What I miss during Chinese new year in HK was the lauriat our old company used to host every year. Haay sarap ng pagkain.
@Purplegirl: Yum, love the tikoy. And how's your little pogi Tikoy? My tikoy package says in English - New Year Pudding which can also be interpreted as 'cake'. So I guess it's about right.

hi, tita Celia! thanks for this reminder. i got the "white" tikoy out of the pantry (see my latest entry).
our Cantonese neighbors (both husband and wife grew up in Hongkong) said the English for tikoy is YEAR CAKE. don't know if they're making that up. tita stel would know.

@Stel: Thanks for that translation. Yeah most Chinoys are of Fukienese extraction. I wonder why? Is the Fukien province nearer to Phils than Canton?
@Bokbok: Haha! That experience of yours is funny now but I bet it wasn't at the time. Really have to be careful with eating sticky stuff.
@Sachiko: Got the chinese name now? Happy tikoy hunting ... hehe!

"soon nin go" daw, new year's pudding in cantonese acc. to my in house expert...tikoy might be a fookienese word.
see when he was in the Phils. he found that most of the ethnic Chinese there spoke Fookien.
hindi rin sila magkaintindihan except for the universal enjoyment of food...point point this and that!

@Thess: hello tita thess! yes I've received your email I just didn't have any time to answer today. Promise tomorrow you will receive a reply.
@Sachiko: how are you doing? Thanks for dropping by. I don't know if tikoy is the Chinese name for the pudding. Maybe we could ask Stel the cantonese name for it.

@LadyC: At this time of the year you can get it in almost any Chinese grocery. You can certainly get one in Chinatown at the West End if you're in London.
@Stel: hallo my dear! Savoury dish with tikoy? sige nga let's try it. Kasi the ones I had in HK were not too great.

hi cecile,
this is just timely because i just bought a box of ube tikoy yesterday from the 'polland' hopia store. it was hard to decide to pick out the ube because there was also a langka and pandan version. mmmmmmm... meron ba kayo nyan?
anyhoo, i thought i had to roll it in flour pa after the egg so buti na lang sinabi mo.
cheers!
