Stef & Joey: This is the counterpart of the pound cake in the US. Yes they're sturdier than the sponge cakes bec. its of the denser consistency.
Nigella's recipe is very similar to this although I think hers has got more flour.

The cake looks excellent, have been meaning to try my hand at Madeira Cake with the recipe from How to be a Domestic Goddess by Nigella...your post certainly is encouraging!

looks good celia! first time i encountered madeira cake was in Australian and English cake-decorating books! i think one was even more similar to a fruitcake. perhaps because it's sturdier than other cakes and will hold up to "manhandling"? LOL. though undecorated it's still scrumptious
