Gravatar Hi! I just learned that lye is poisonous. If I did not soak my glutinous rice in lye water, would my suman still taste the same as with rice soaked in lye water? Why should the rice be soaked in lye water? I love this suman but I did not know that lye is poisonous until now. I'd like to try it without soaking the rice in lye water. What do you think will happen to the flavor of my suman? Thanks.

Gravatar Hello Weng, is that Japanese sticky sweet rice? Baka puede nga, sige try it let's how it goes.

Gravatar hi Nenita, my relatives never put in salt in the mix. But I do understand that a little of it would enhance the flavour. I'll try that next time. Thanks for the tip!

Gravatar hi Jerry, I do remember my grandfather making lihiya water in the same way. So you're from Tacloban. My tatay is from Eastern Samar and I do miss my late paternal grandmother's binakol.

Gravatar celia can i use sweet rice? diba halos pareho lang yun sa glutinous!

Gravatar Celia, I am just wondering if you missed adding salt to the rice and lye mixture. I tried putting salt and it made a lot of diference in the taste, especially if your going to fry the left overs.

Gravatar Hi! i just love the very detailed description with matching pictures pati on how to cook this suman sa lihiya. I don't know if I remember right, but for lihiya water i think we were using the fine ash from the pugon(wood fed) and mixing with water. In my place in Tacloban we use a leaf from some wild plants called 'hagikhik', with its spade shape and its strength when folded unlike the ordinary banana leaf that sometimes splits while folding. I have a picture that i'd like to share taken last May 2006 during my holiday.
More power!!

Gravatar hi Mike, I agree it's hard to fit in the cooking of these delicacies. Ako nga katakot-takot na planning ahead and scheduling para sigurado kong mag-isa lang ako sa bahay para walang istorbo.

Gravatar omigosh! that's something i've been missing since my lola passed away . . . now, i can try my hands on it . . . the question is: when? hehehe

Gravatar Hi Celia,

Love this entry. They sell frozen banana leaves here and have used it as a decoration on a plate when we host a dinner party. I will use it for this now! LOL

My friends always admired and ask why banana leaves on the plate? I always say it reminds me of Phils.

Thanks for sharing your recipe. I miss suman.

Gravatar Keiko: Hehehe. The step by step is more for myself and my kids so we won't forget how to do it. The taste is actually bland, it's the combination of the dips and the suman that sort of 'defines' the overall taste.

babe_kl: We've got so many dishes in common with Malaysian cuisine, isn't it?

Blair_mitch: hi there! Thanks for visiting.

Gravatar Ang sarap naman nito!!! : )

Gravatar celia, this suman is pretty similar to the alkaline bak chang. i like the thot they're eaten with coconut & sugar

Gravatar Celia - looks like reading a Japanese cookbook - great 'step by step' post! I'm vey curious about the taste too... it looks really yummy!

Gravatar Karen & Jmom: I do hope people won't get intimidated in making suman that's why I put in the step by step procedures here.

Dexie: Easy ka lang, take a rest and watch a movie like Harry Potpot 4.

Iska: Talaga? Walang dahon ng saging dyan sa Beijing? Hmm ... curious ...

Gravatar naku salamat d2 sa yong step-by-step recipe. i wud love to try this one but i don't think i can find banana leaves here....

Gravatar omg, ang sipag mo, CeliaK! How I wish I could taste your suman. I sure miss my lola's, especially this time of year.

This is another must try recipe for me. thanks for posting the recipe and for the step-by-step photos

Gravatar hi Celia, dinner went well. it was a potluck so I didn't slave off myself this year. I only brought 3 items, 1 was made by hubby .

Gravatar Fantastic! Those are perfectly wrapped suman sa lihiya (we call them suman bulagta). The tutorial shall come in handy for many people for many years to come!

Galing talaga!

Gravatar Hello Dexie, how was your Thanksgiving dinner?

Gravatar wow, great step by step process. very meticulous . it's been a long time since i've had suman. i'll live vicarously through these pics. thanks celiaK

Gravatar Stef: You're lucky your kids like sumans. I think we need more taste tests to convince my kids.

Joey: Mysteries are meant to be revealed. Ako naman, I'd like to know how to make the cassava suman or suman sa ibos. I hope there's one among us who can share the recipe.

Sassy: Dakila ba? I just had enough time, ingredients and inclination to do it that day.

Sha: Try chinese groceries they might have it.

Gravatar naku i asked sa filipino store if they have lye water wala daw... i will ask some friends mag dala sila pag balik dito.

nasabik lang ko... mag experiment

Gravatar celiak!!!! you actually made the suman!! grabe, saludo ako. sobrang matrabaho at maraming hugasin yan hehehehe di kaya ng powers ko hehehe

Gravatar Ooops, typed too fast...I meant the process of making suman has always been a mystery to ME, hehe

Gravatar The process of making suman has always been a mystery, though I can eat tons of it...You have made it so simple in clear...great procedural pictures!

Gravatar celia, your suman looks just like my mom's/family's, though sometimes we make the thin kind too. my kids are suman fiends!

Gravatar Stel: Madali lang siya di ba? Ang key ingredients na kailangan ay yung lye water and banana leaves.

Sha: Easy to do, my dear. Galing ng bagong blog template mo, very neat and clear.

Lani & Arnold: Thanks for dropping by. The wrapping is pretty straightforward, di ba?

Grace: Naku wawa ka naman. Wala bang Chinese stores dyan?

Gravatar Wow! sarap.. nammiss ko na yan.. nice to see it even d2 lang sa blog. I feel like doing it but, i dont have the ingredients and they are nowhere to find here in Angola.. hu hu

Gravatar Ang galing mo talaga ate celia,God bless.
