You are spot on. This I think is unfortunately exactly what is going to happen. While the Turkish army and sober minds in the government may not want this the people are pissed. I mean really really pissed and I don't think they are open to much prevarication. The anger has been building for a while and no politician is going to risk trying to confront it.
One small correction. Hurriyet is a mass market newspaper read by a broad segment of the population. The newspaper Michael is thinking of is probably Cumhuriyet which is a Kemalist newspaper, read by foreign policy hawks and thesecular elite and has a much more limited circulation.
