The Bush administration, in referring to Iran as part of an "axis of evil" all be ensured an anti-american, anti-israel, pro-islamist freak stronghold in leadership. That was their intent, as Iran was number two on the list of countries Cheney and Rumsfeld planned to invade. The invasion plans, of course, have been severely hampered by the Iraq failures.
It's difficult to believe any US or European attempt at integrating Iran into ally status with its current regime will be successful. The legitimacy of the current Iranian regime rests upon its declarations of America as its enemy. They end their obligatory prayer services with "Death to America." And no matter what America offers in carrots, Iran will pursue nuclear weapons. It is absolute naivete to believe otherwise. They want them, they can get them, and nothing can stop them...unless the regime is toppled from within, maybe. There was an opportunity for this before the "axis of evil" mess, when President Khatami was in 'somewhat' power. But the US wasn't interested. They wanted control, and instead, they've given Iran the bomb.
