These are very troubling issues, Cernig. Excellent post.
I have no doubt at all that Gates should be rejected, if only because of his involvement in Iran Contra.
But the DOD's grab to take-over as much of the intelligence budget as possible has been a disaster for the US. I fear that it will only continue, if Gates is nominated to head DOD.
One advantage of the Democrats winning the Senate should be that the President would want to consult with the leaders before offering up any nominees.
I feel that Bush is just trying to get one more crony through the door.
The fact that Gates is a member of the Iraq study group should give everyone pause about its coming recommendations for getting us out of that misbegotten war. We need to really vet that committee, and quick.
