In fairness, and I'm a huge Obama supporter, the problem with L'Affaire Wright is that the most intense moments (rebroadcast continually on youtube) of this preacher's flights of rhetoric fancy encapsulate the liberal id writ large. And people assume that this is the true set of feelings that lie in Obama's chest, the subconscious motivations that belie his reasonable exterior. You're right that the id's being front and center isn't good for either party (although id-iot in chief Bush somehow got reelected in 2004...). But it cuts both ways ...
Not a bad point at all. It's something to remember: "zombie arguments" do tend to swirl around a lot, but often they only convince those who were almost certainly not supporters in the first place.
At some point, you have to bid those people "good riddance", and move on with the rest of America.
The conservative id alienates the moderate middle.
A half black candidate gives a sane, reasonable speech on race in America today. Moderates listen and consider him sane.
White movement conservatives spin and scream their usual old tired slogans. The half black man looks all the more sane.
After 19 hours, more than 1 million You Tube viewers listen to the 35 minute speech.

So far the Obama/Wright juxtaposition youtube has gotten 35,000 views. If it gets a million Obama is toast.
Consider this: if McCain had spent 20 years going to a church that spewed Aryan Nation stuff he would be unelectable. Which is as it should be. Americans these days hate racists. If we hold the Black man to the same standards (we will) Obama is toast.
Worse. If he gets strong support from the Dems the party will be branded as the racist party. Fair or not.
People will go back and look at who the biggest supporters of Jim Crow before the Civil Rights Act were and say the Democrats are reverting to form.
People will be asking why he sent his children to listen to the minister. Why he gave the church money. Why he was a member for 20 years. Why he is still a member.
I have heard rumors that Obama is a plant by Rove to destroy the Dem Party. I have read that Rs were some of his early supporters. Abetted by the "hate Hillary" wing of the Ds. Daschle is supposed to have his fingerprints all over this one.
How stupid - in a party based on group identities - is it to run a black man against a woman? Only a genius could have come up with something so Machiavellian. Aided by the "really smart people" in the D party.
Sadly (because a good opposition keeps both parties more honest) I think this will fracture the D coalition. For Nov '08 for sure. However, it could be permanent.
You guys are looking at this from inside politics. Look at it from the point of view of a woman who spends a minute a week on national politics. One look at a Wright video and it is all over.

How about comparing Hagee's wish that the Jews all go back to Israel so that they can be immolated when the Apocalypse starts? Just as racist? Yet he's a long-term GOP power-broker in good standing representing a large rightwing Rapturist movement which is intrinsically linked to the GOP as fundraisers, office-bearers and supporters, not just a solitary pastor.
