Newshoggers Comments

Gravatar Hi Libby,

This just up on the BBC's news-site:
"An ingredient in marijuana may be useful for treating brain cancers, say Spanish researchers from Madrid."

Regards, C

Gravatar Actually that's an old study Cernig, but it's a really good one that has been widely ignored in the US, one might suspect because the DEA is blocking the production of research grade marijuana. They're sitting on a decision right now for Lyle Craker at UMASS that has been in the works for years. An administrative law judge recommended approval months ago but the DEA has the final say.

There's only one licensed facility in the US, run by the government, that provides pure schwag for the few US studies that are allowed in an attempt to skew the results. But even under those conditions the studies come back with positive results.

There was one done in California in the last two years that showed that not only did it not cause lung cancer, it actually helps prevent it. And that study was done by the guy who did the original study that found the opposite for NIDA.

The science is there but they have $50 billion worth of bureauracy making a living on the prohibition. They don't want to give it up.
