I have a great-great-grandfather who was a Union corporal buried at Andersonville. I visited his grave there and also the Chickamauga battlefield where he was wounded and captured.
I was lucky enough to meet Dr. Martin Luther King and admire him greatly. However, my admiration doesn't extend to Jimmy Carter or Al Gore.

it says a lot about this region that our land lays claim to some of the most terrible pieces of US history but our people produce some of the greatest dreams for America and the world.
Do you suppose the two may be related? That having big, nasty problems to solve means you’re more likely to uncover the truly great people in your midst?
As for Dave’s comment, not that I don’t have any respect for Carter or Gore, but I would say that MLKjr. rates quite a bit higher in my opinion than either of them. It’s more about how great a man King was rather than any deficiency with the other two, but because of how high calibre King was, it is a little hard to consider Gore or Carter his peers.
