Gravatar Here's the first part of the Sullivan post [my emphasis in bold]:

A reader writes:

My son is an officer in the Army and he is part of the ongoing action over there. Here is what he wrote me some time ago.

I'm not going to dispute that the father of the officer got this letter, nor that the writer of the letter is a U.S. Army officer serving in Iraq. But, there is no indication on when this was sent. Some time ago could be last year or last month.

Maybe instead of spinning things like these as facts, maybe a little, you know, reporting, might actually make this a statement about what's going on now, instead of whenever this officer sent his letter to his dad.

Gravatar SteveIL, we make plenty of statements about what's going on now, as you know if you don't pick and choose what posts you read. Try Eric Martin's excellent post from yesterday for starters.

Reading the letter, it may have been written "some time ago" but everything in it is still happening now as far as I know.

What exactly would you say from the letter isn't happening now? Or are you just constructing strawmen out of spurious time differences.

If I say "my son wrote to me some time ago about the Great Pyramid", just because it was some time ago doesn't mean the Great Pyramid has gone away in the interim. His observations about the pyramid have just as much value now if nothing about the pyramid has changed.

Shamanic, I like your Iraqi moon base idea. Right in line with cat ranching. It's probably more cost effective than the war even, when you consider the advertising potential.

That's an opinion, not fact. It is being presented by Sullivan (and the poster) as fact. It very well may be fact, and I wouldn't really try to dispute it. But "facts" lose credibility when those mundane little details (dates, places, etc.) get left out. Then they become propaganda.
