Last I heard, the Brittish were in Iranian waters... Still, it doesn't excuse the action.

Peace,

Gravatar McCain has, or likely always was, a scary guy. I suspected if he became the POTUS he'd reinstate the draft and keep the US in its belligerent groove towards both its former allies and make-belief enemies.

Re: the HMS Cornwall incident, professional, calm sensible heads seem to be, so far, prevailing.

Officers said they hoped this was an error of judgement made by a local commander that would be resolved with negotiations. "I hope we find this is a simple misunderstanding at the tactical level," the Commodore said.

While tensions at national level have been strained lately, the British insist that they have maintained a cordial relationship with the Iranians. The border is indistinct and frequently the Iranians stray close to the coalition ships but, until now, they have moved back across the diving line without dispute.

Commodore Lambert said: "We have a healthy, professional respect. We police and patrol our side, and they police and patrol their side."

Gravatar Last I heard, McCain, the supposed "frontrunner" of the party of hawks, is not able to top -10 points behind GOP front runners.

Last I heard, McCain's base of support in the crosstabs of polls is from the elite and in the minority "establishment" wing of the GOP, not the base.

Last I heard, McCain generates serious enmity from a substantial number of GOP voters.

Last I heard, McCain announced he was going to have some very weak fundraising numbers when he announces those figures in a few weeks.

Last I heard, McCain was having serious problems garnering the endorsement of his own state of Arizona for the '08 race.

Point is, your assumptions are incredibly facile if you think McCain thinks for all "hawks," let alone a substantial number. He definitely was way off here, but that doesnt mean most hawks feel the same way. In fact, Im pretty sure most hawks DO think Britain should take "decisive action" - with the US not only cheering from the sidelines, but lending a helping hand. Whether realistic or not, possible or not, or smart or not, I am not arguing that point.

I am, however, addressing your unfounded assumption that any other hawks feel the same way. I am, however, saying you really dont know what youre talking about if you lump that kook in with other hawks just on the basis of the fact that he gets the most attention from Fox, CNN, MSNBC, and the rest of the talking heads.

Gravatar Hi MJS,

You're saying a lot about what I didn't say and about what you assume I assume (and you assume incorrectly). I think your own preconceptions are showing. All I wrote is that his statement gave a definite (and under-reported) reason that hawks shouldn't be voting McCain and neither should doves.
