The "Betrayus" meme will be there in 2012 when Gen. P runs for President on the GOP "We-Were-Stabbed-In-The-Back" platform. The real disgrace is that the Dems are lying doggo, allowing Bush to hand off the firefighting duties for the fire in the Mid-East that he set. The GOP is going to turn this into the Dems' war. One term Hillary, yessiree!

In all likelihood, they believe that to be the truth and not a catchy slogan. The MoveOn crowd are factional zealots, not a representative sampling of the population. Or even of the Democratic Party. If you find that ad to be stupidly counterproductive for your side C. just wait, the true believers have yet to ramp up.

Petraeus though is playing for the institutional legacy of the Army here, not simply " the Surge". Will we go into the next war or humanitarian intervention lobbing 105 mm howitzer shells into villages where sniper fire came from or will we do sensible COIN?

The "kinetic" generals who helped add fuel to the fire for several years want to stick the COIN guys with the failures of " Big Army", much Westmoreland's clique did after Vietnam.
