Gravatar Three years and 3000 US dead to late, IMO. Perhaps with Iran help and influence the state of the ME would be much different than it is now, and we would be making strides in Afghanistan. Perhaps with a more knowledgable President the US would not be in the position it is in, and Iraq would still be under sanctions (a criminal act IMO) but not invaded.
Like you, I am cynical about the reasons for these talks. You have people on both sides that would like nothing better than to plunge the region into a Holy War, and you have people within the Bush administration that appear to be obsessed with the profitability such hostilities would enable.
I can only hope that I am deluded, and this is a serious reaching out by all nations involved to find a solution.

Gravatar Hi filcher,

Looking at the newswires today, Sarkozy of France, the Russian FM and China have all warned Bush against war with Iran. The UK and Pakistan, among others, are already on record as saying they won't support such a war.

The other day Pace said the US military was "categorically" NOT planning to attack Iran. In this age of "Kremlin-watch D.C." I'm suddenly wondering if this was a veiled warning to his political masters too.

Pass me a tinfoil hat.

Regards, C
