Ms. Menchu is a proven liar about her brothers' deaths (still alive), her working on a coffee plantation as a child (she didn't, she attended an exclusive boarding school)and many other things.
Why should we believe her now about this or anything?

Well, we might believe her this time because the guy who broke the story confessed to lying about it.

The story was actually pushed the hardest by the Guardian, whose correspondent failed to do even the most basic checking. Rigoberta Menchu was a guest in the hotel. There's no way in the world anything like this could have happened.
But the story sits on two erroneous presumptions:
[1] Mexicans are dumb enough to make a mistake like this (leaving out the fact that Cancun -- created by the Mexican government from a base of zero -- is somehow competent enough to host 4 million people a year, including approximately 1.5 million Mexicans).
[2] Racism is an important factor here. Race is very rarely an issue. Economics and cultural differences do cause discrimination, but skin color is way, way down on the scale.
Just pathetic.

Hey Jules. Nice to see you here.
Thanks for following through on this story. And I'm glad to see the hurricane is going to miss you. One less thing to worry about.

I heard a story once that a Rockerfeller who had been sailing around the world and had been exploring Papua New Guinea tried to check into a 5-star hotel in Bali, but he was dressed in rags.
The manager kicked him out, so Rockerfeller bought the hotel and fired him.

Perhaps she was removed for being an egregious fraud. :o)
On a serious note, if she was kicked out for her ethnicity, that's odious but her credibility is deservedly thin.
