Newshoggers Comments

Gravatar Regarding Tim F's comments, Iran doesn't cross the border unless they have iron-clad assurance that it won't lead to a US bombing campaign.

As for the Sunni/Shis Arabs, I'm betting they'll get to work on expanding their influence and power in Mosul and Kirkuk while the peshmerga are distracted.

Generally, the nationalists are rather pissed with the Kurds for being such buddies with the US. They'll probably make a lot of noises to the contrary, but I doubt they'll have much trouble watching the Kurds get pounded on by the Turks for a while.

Gravatar Yeh, my comments about Iran might prove a bit hasty. I suppose that Iran could figure that if Turkey wants to sink its army in Kurdistan killing the same people that the Iranians want to kill, more power to them. My reasoning went that Iraq is in such a hopeless state now that Turkey could easily peel off regions that it wanted for whatever reason - say to occupy a West Bank style "security buffer" to push the PKK farther south. But yes, Iran would be both crazy and stupid to get in on the action as long as the US is itching for a chance to bomb it.

If there is anything to this story, my strong feeling is that this is a gambit by the Turkish army to make their preferred outcome inevitable.
