What about Freddy Dean?
No harm, no foul, Chad. When I was a tot, I was a huge Brian Sipe and Kenny Stabler fan. who knew?

Between the Coryell era and the baby blues, the Chargers have two of the great uniforms in their closets and choose to wear the lackluster current garb. I too was a big fan of those Fouts era teams. To me the worst loss was to the Raiders on the deflected pass. Or the Oilers.

Jeez, Chad......think the walk down memory lane could have waited until next week maybe? Karma!

Whenever I praise a Pats opponent, the Pats seem to cream them. Not that I'm attempting a reverse jinx or anything.

Chad. You should have listened to the much smarter Olson kids up Washington Street who tried to steer you right about the Patriots - especially that white headed kid. But you wouldn't listen.

No problem from this end, Chad. I used to love the F. Robby - B. Robby Orioles.
Have you checked out the Patriots Crazy History Thread on SoSH? It is an absolute classic: http://sonsofsamhorn.net/

Fantastic stuff, Chad. I have several DVD's of Chargers games circa 1979-1981. In one game against the Raiders, Jefferson makes the greatest catch I've ever seen, a one-handed, over-the-shoulder, diving TD grab while still managing to stay in bounds in the back of the end zone. AND NBC NEVER SHOWED A REPLAY OF IT!
I, like you, am a converted Pats fan (Staubach and the Cowboys were my first love). I've worked up a healthy hate of the current Chargers, but the team of that era is still one of my all-time favorites.

The Olson kids? Vaguely familiar. One of them was an albino, or opaque, or something like that, right?
By the way, Kevin, do you remember the Cassidy family that lived in the Maiers' house for a year or two back in the late '70s, early '80s? Well, one of their kids, Chris, is a Navy Seal-turned-freakin'-astronaut. I'm beginning to think I really was the neighborhood dummy.

I think the owner during the J.J. Jefferson era was Gene Klein. Klein later wrote "First Down and a Billion," a fun memoir of those times.

That's amazing about the Chris Cassidy. I didn't know but I'm glad to hear he's doing well. They only lived across the street for such a short time that we hardly got to know them. Take care. Kevin

You're right, Jason, it was Gene Klein. Spanos bought the team few years later, after all the contract silliness with Jefferson and Fred Dean. Thanks for the heads-up.

Looks like that Vinatieri signing could be the difference after all. Well, that and picking up a pair of Iowa boys named Bob Sanders and Dallas Clark. I taught them most of what they know.

And somewhere, a pissed-off Mike Vanderjagt kicks his dog . . . and shanks him 30 yards wide.
By the way, Donovan, nothing made me laugh harder the other night than this:
Dwight: That's what she said.
Michael: Don't you dare.
Me love you long Tim was pretty funny, too.

thanks chad. Very few have loved the greatest receiver, bar none, as much as I, but your ode to the Coryell period, specifically the brief shinning ones with JJ was beautiful. Really one of the great and rare convergences of specialized talent in sports history. Fouts, JJ, Joyner, Winslow, Muncie, and the Air traffic control genius, Don C, leading them in for landings. Damn, that was, to me the zenith moment for receivers in all of Football history. Timing for sure. A rare, brief burst of true perfection, in that glorious San Diego golden afternoon sun. At 4pm, as you said on what seemed like every sunday, on the East coast (NY) it was like watching something happening on Mars, the weather, babes, Fout's beard in that heat and JJ's goggles.
I had the Jefferson 83 Jersey and did wear it to school as a junior and senior. Now that's a real dufus. Lucky enough to have a girl friend and not still stuggling to impress in hopes of a random make out session, did gave me that freedom... to look like a total nut with those bolts of lightning on the striking blue Jersey, and the big yellow 83. I may not have been as bold other wise. Doesn't say much for her, or maybe it does... You are right, other that the Giants at Green Bay last week, that charger teamed played in the two best play off games ever.
I'm a life long suffering Jet fan, always a New york team fan, but the way these Pats are now, it's very hard not to love Brady and his receivers. Best team ever. Best Dynasty, head coach, QB ever... no matter the outcome of Saturday. And that is likely not the last SB they will win, after all big Tom says he wants a ring for all five fingers. On both hands.
Thanks for the article.

I like the cut of your jib,-I remember being a Cowboys fan and during the 79 playoffs I figured the San Diego would shred the Oilers then take down those darn Steelers-then get to face the Cowboys in the Super Bowl-2 big upsets and it didn't happen. Fast foward a couple of seasons and the bad-boy Raiders got hammered on a Sunday afternoon by Fouts n Company 55-20 or thereabouts. Good times!
