Wouldn't a Santana trade just involve sending Minnesota a fax with every player in the Red Sox minor leagues on it with the note "just circle whomever you want"?

Gravatar Hey, let's not forget to wish a Happy 45th Birthday to Old Roger today. Or to point out to him that in his last 48.1 innings he has a very un-Rocketlike 21 strikeouts.

Thanks for that Duane Kuiper baseball card. He looks a little like a cross between Kevin Millar and Dwight Yoakam.

Gravatar Garnett, Santana... superstars from Minnesota who might be worth a king's ransom in trade.

I'm very reluctant to let go of top prospects, but if there's one baseball player who would be worth strip-mining your farm system for, it's Santana. Proven, top-flight, healthy as a horse, and still young. To me, the deciding factor on a hypothetical Santana-for-Buchholz, Ellsbury, Bowden, Delcarmen, Remy, Ben Cherington, Chad Finn, Wally, and the Citgo sign deal is signability. If Santana is a one-year rental, he's not worth it. If you can sign him to a long-term deal before he goes free agent, then I'd be inclined to say yes.

One big reason for holding on to prospects: they tremendously enhance a team's payroll flexibility. Even the Yankees can't completely stock a team with All-Star veterans; they wind up skimping on the bench and bullpen. The Sox' finances are greatly helped by the fact that they're paying peanuts to Papelbon, Pedroia, Youkilis, Delcarmen, and Lester (and, until last week, Gabbard). If your farm system is producing a stream of MLB-ready players, you can afford to pay the best free agents to fill specific needs.

Gravatar I agree 100% with Geoff--I would just ask Minny who they wanted for Cytana, then set up a Garnett-esque package to bring him here.

I mean would anybody care if the Sox gave up Bucholz, Ellsbury or Manny D. for a 2-time Cy Young winner still in his prime? Especially with Schill most likely on the way out?

This is the same team that traded a potential Hall of Fame first baseman for a two-month rental of Larry Sunflower Seeds Anderson after all.

Cytana in Boston--now there's something to dream about.

I agree with you on BIB as well. By no means is it Emmy material, but it is entertaining and beats some of the other piles of steaming horseshit the WWL has produced.

Gravatar Ahh, that's more like it. As I scrolled down the KG montage, I was wondering how you could omit what I feel is a Pulitzer-caliber photo, and there it is...

You made us wait all week and NOTHING on Gagne? For shame.

Gravatar Don't give up any top prospects for a rental. Ask the Twins for right to negotiate before trade and, if he signs, send them the whole AA team.

Gravatar Don't forget that Suzyn is from my hometown of Newton. Who can ever forget her admonishing Johnny Damon (back in his Red Sox days) "don't dare cut that hair" ?

Gravatar Doesn't mlb get the money from the Lester Baseballs? They get the money from the tshirts and hats and etc. I don't think it's the Sox that are making the money-grab here.

Gravatar The lester baseball sale makes me sick. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Gravatar Why hasn't your friend in Concord gotten his own blog yet? Did he get lost in a buffet line or something?

Gravatar I have no idea what that means.

Gravatar How is Donte Stallworth an "injury prone tease?" He's missed 4 games in the last 3 years. I like Jabar as much as the next guy, but to rate him ahead of Stallworth is a bit of a stretch. Stallworth has 28 career touchdowns to Gaffney's 8, many of those coming from the jobless Aaron Brooks. Stallworth also brings a vertical element to the Patriots that they truly haven't ever had. He averaged almost 20 yards a catch last year and Jeff Garcia doesn't exactly have Brady's arm.

I know it's tempting to get down on Stallworth because he is not practicing and Gaffney is having a great camp. However, if I remember correctly, Deion Branch didn't do much in the way of practicing or preseason games and he's pretty well respected in these parts.

Donte Stallworth's going to be worth the investment. Give it some time.

Gravatar Now that's how you manipulate stats to make an argument. Yes, he's missed four games in three years - the four games coming last year. He also missed eight games the previous two years. I'm not doubting his ability - he'll be a great asset if he's on the field - but I think there's some question about his ability to keep his legs healthy.

Gravatar I have noticed many changes in your blog and they are like improvements for you.
