My new favorite part of the Clemens saga is the idea of the Rocket ordering an HGH injection for Debbie before the SI swimsuit photo shoot. Just so the world could see that he had a hot wife. It may well be true that Roger's ego is so colossal, he has actually managed to convince himself that he never juiced.
Re: Sean Casey... as a dual Red Sox/Tigers fan, I can tell you that the Mayor is a great clubhouse/chemistry guy, a vastly improved version of Kevin Millar. But don't expect to get much on the field; he hits enough singles to have an okay batting average, and he takes some walks, but that's all. He's not even very good defensively anymore.
I would, however, love to see a footrace between Casey and Mirabelli. Could probably time it with a sundial. Or a calendar.

3) I brought up Tito's health issues but I know I wasn't the one who brought up the thought of John Farrell taking over. I think it'll eventually be done but it's still a little troubling.
Also, Mazz had a really interesting tidbit in the Herald where he said that no manager since Joe Cronin has gone beyond 5 years with the Red Sox. Tito's approaching his 5th year. I just found that tidbit interesting
5) Arnold isn't that bad. I don't mind him as much. Nerdy? Definitely, but it sure beats Glen Geffner reading off the Media Guide word for word. I'm surprised he didn't accidentally read the copyright information during one of the broadcasts. Actually he probably did once and I didn't catch it.

If you'd allow me one self-indulgent criticism of Dale Arnold, and like Chad with the old Maine Guide players, it's something that I'll never forget...
On Aug. 9, 1995, Grateful Dead lead guitarist Jerry Garcia died. Love him or loathe him, there's no denying his influence on people and music - even in death. I found out he head died when I was listening to Dale on 'EEI, and he completely made a joke of this 'drug-addled, hippie rocker' that just died - who cares?' It was horrendous, and to me it showed just how much of a nerd/geek he really is. He had a chance to break news that was pretty important to a lot of his listeners, and he completely botched it - badly.
His work's fine enough, but I just can't get past his Jerry diss.

fran'coma' is far from being baseball's 'best' manager. his use of
gagme down the stretch last year was
testimony to his brilliance!

Chad, I just emailed you. My friend at Fragile Freddy's (http://www.fragilefreddy.blogspot.com/) came up with the Francona/Farrell angle. I'm sending the link as soon as I find it.

Dear Bill, I actually considered that one of "Coma"'s best moments. It takes a lot of moxie to stand up for what you believe is best for the team, even if it is wrong, and especially in Boston.
It made perfect sense waiting for gagme to adjust. The fact it never worked should be considered a surprise, and not bad managing.

Buster Olney said tonight that Blanton could be a Yankee for a couple of Double-A players "at most". Should we be going hard after this guy or does Buchholz/Lester fill the potential Schilling void?

That's funny, most reports have had the A's asking for the moon and the stars for Blanton - they supposedly wanted Joey Votto and Homer Bailey from Cincy, for example. Though he doesn't strike me as much more than a slightly above average innings eater, you'd have to think the Sox would be interested if they could get him for, say, Masterson/Bowden and Lowrie.

I only add this because no one else has, but I have no doubt that the continued usage of Gagne in tight spots was as much (if not more) by the hand of Theo as it was by Tito himself.
And Chad, you're right, I suppose. But consider these splits:
2007 Home: 2.69 ERA in 110+ IP
2007 Away: 5.11 ERA in 119+ IP
To his credit, he was consistently good in 2005 (with a BABIP of .249, a stat which pitchers have little-to-no control over), and consistently mediocre in 2006 (and of course, there's the caveat that ERA wasn't the best stat to pick, though I think it works over that kind of sample).
Beane is selling something more than he's actually got, and he knows which GMs will bite and pay for Haren-lite even if they're getting a lesser pitcher even than that. Theo isn't one of them.
I guess what I'm really saying is...Josh Fogg is still a FA, right? (Yeah, not entirely serious about that.)

Well, obviously I wasn't advocating Fogg, and not that I wouldn't take Blanton.
But I think all I'd send back is maybe Brandon Moss and a nice thank-you note. The separation between Blanton and a Josh Fogg just isn't that much in reality.

The phrase "Snake Oil Salesman" comes to mind when I see Rusty Hardin. To me, he is the best thing about this whole Clemens debacle. He is entertaining to the max. I almost expect to see him trying to sell a monorail to the citizens of Springfield.

Takes quite a man to throw his wife under the bus in order to keep a Hall of Fame candidacy alive. Scumbag!
BTW, Roger Cossack just made a great point on ESPN; wouldn't it have been nice to see Andy Pettitte there today so we could see his demeanor and Clemens' as one best bud had to basically call the other a liar.

What a complete, utter embarassment. Anyone else think that maybe the first family of Texas (Bush) had some influence on these supposedly "objective" lawmakers? The Republicans on the panel were on Roger's side, the Dems on McNamee's. Absolutely disgraceful.

it was apparent that many of the congremen/woman were ill prepared.several lacked basic knowledge (maybe wondered why they are listening to this) or the ability to deliver there thoughts in a smooth manner. i thought it was bizarre,as well as a waste of time! our elected officials must have more important issues to discuss.

Chad and chris d,
I submit: they were better prepared for this than for most other things (I'm sure many are sports fans and, more importantly, they knew a lot of people would be watching). The thought of these idiots "fixing" healthcare makes me sick.
Pointless Office tie-in. Michael Scott is a pretty good portrayal of a lightweight Congressman, except nobody handles him and gets him to censor his most idiotic remarks. But the superficiality, awkwardness, emptiness, and inability to fit in, all packaged somewhat slickly, are spot on. Picture John Kerry "hunting" or "talkin' sports."
