Comfort foods are foods that give you comfort not in a taste sense, but in that they remind you of good things, like sweet childhood memories.
Eggnog is one of those things that remind me of good cheer, so that's where the cake comes in.
My favorite comfort food is pasta and meatballs because it always reminds of me of Sundays at Grandma's house. It's like eating your memories. Or something like that.
