I guess this is one of those times I should have paid attention to my trucker husband when he recited the history of the PA Turnpike to me. He actually did the on a few occasions. I'll just blame my partial deafness and not my blatant ignorance on this one.

O,....K,...
Then why in PA and NJ do we call roads that lead to a specific place a pike(like West Chester Pike, Lancaster Pike, Black Horse Pike - that lead to the Black Horse Inn in Camden), but in NY, the same type of road is called a "turnpike?"

BTW - Did you know,...
The land for the PATP was originally owned by the New York Central RR. They were trying to build a line to Chicago to compete with the Pennsylvania RR's Main Line. Eventually, they gave up, as it was cost prohibitive.
