I DON'T NEED VASELINE...MY FACE WON'T GET TOUCHED!!!

Gravatar "You don't sound Black over the phone"

I've gotten this one before..and I always think the same thing...'What does black sound like?'

Gravatar Love the list. Damn right, don't be worrying about my damn hair.
What the hell is that about, anyway?
Like I have to explain myself to you....lol

Great list, and one that should be posted worldwide!

Gravatar "you're so articulate" really does make me want to smack people.
And "you don't sound black over the phone". If I could only REACH through the phone, you'd learn not to say that....lol

Gravatar Anytime I hear something like this (and I do, despite my bright skindedness ) I always look the offender square in the eye and ask them, "What exactly do you mean?"

*cue studdering and sweaty palms*

This always gets their panties in a wad, and they either, 1) laugh awkwardly and desperately try to reword, or 2) just say, "Well you know what I mean... I mean I'm not racist or anything."

Hmph. We have a ways to go, Lord have mercy.

Gravatar Great list. I've heard them all and then some.

A White, female co-worker once asked me if it was true that Black men were in the regular habit of leaving their families for days on end . . . One of her husband's Black male co-workers had assured her this was "the norm' in most of our households.

Uh-huh, some of us are SO not helping the situation (LOL).

I agree. Some of "us" do reinforce some of these stereotypes. I remember being in an office where the secretary was loudly having a personal conversation and hear supervisor asked her to keep it down. The secretary told her to "stop tripping" because she should know by now that when black folks get together they can be loud! WTH....

Gravatar However, why does it seem like we keep getting asked these questions but no one else does? Why is Sen. Obama still being drilled on Rev. Wright, but Sen. Clinton gets a pass on sex abuse allegations of her pastor? (Is this the same pastor, who by the way, supported what Rev. Wright had to say?).

Rhetorical questions, I know....

Gravatar I have definitely heard my share of #1 and #7; it's crazy because I sit and think if I am supposed to sound some other way. It's crazy!

Gravatar Yes, the one about "you are so articulate" is truly offensive but I do still see that, even on national news programs discussing certain blacks.

Gravatar I have definitely experienced many of these stereoptypics first-hand.

Now I'm at the point where I don't feel the needto "prove my humanity" to anyone (whites particularly). Lecturing people with a few examples of how these stereotypes are false seem to be completely ineffective. "Flava of Love" and most local news stations will reinforce those stereotypes at a rate 10x over.
