China today is about as truly communist as the United States is truly Christian.
Mark S, economically no. The pure fact that communism doesn't work as an economic system brought quick change to that -- greed has a way of fixing that particular social ill quite well. But all those other delightful features of communism like repression of: religion, travel, free speech, as well as force birth control, abortions, lack of social mobility, lowest common denominator healthcare, government control of everything, treating the glory of the state above the rights of the individual, etc. etc. are all alive and well. So it is the worst of both worlds. The state (and the upper elite) reap the benefits of capitalist trade, while the populace lives under socialist rule.
maiki, if you leave out forced abortions and "lowest common denominator health care", everything in your list of Communist Chinese atrocities is now true of America.
As for health care, China does not have socialised medicine. At all. If you can't pay in cash, then you don't get treatment.

A thought on China: Isn't their brand of capitalist experimentation controlled by the state? And if so, wouldn't that a) centrally planned economy added with b) repression as mentioned above make it technically a fascist state? I know it isn't a popular word, but I think they're closer to textbook fascism than to either communism or capitalism.
China's national unity is very fragile, and its central government's control is very superficial. Most of China's economy is not centrally planned; the powers repose in local Party bosses.
The official ideology, which is strictly enforced at least in the schools and in the media, is nationalism.
Wonder how many abortions have been performed in China as of today because of the one child policy.?
