Since the collapse of European communism, which unfortunately came much too long after the refutation of Marxism, the left has been without an intellectual foundation. Now: it seems to be a fact that every creed and philosophy grows more strident and shrill as it makes the transition from the study to the street. Activists rarely have the patience to master complex intellectual systems; they are after slogans and causes and whatever will fire the blood. Hence there is in all great movements and ideas the risk of a downward slippage into unconscious parody. With the extreme left, however, nothing solid remains at the center anymore, and all that is left is parody.
