Beating people up is a sin. When Christians do it, I condemn it. When gays do, I get to hear lots of excuses for it or, more telling still, stony silence as in the case of Mary Stachowicz, who somehow missed the glare of media attention accorded saint and martyr Mathew Shepherd.
I know the peace-loving gay activist community is so terribly terribly concerned about violence. It's just that it's so darned selective in its outrage.
But do keep up the myth of omnipresent Christian brutality toward gays. It's an awfully effective lie and does so very much to fill the empty silence of the gay community about the extremism of its own members.
Murderers, rapists, and all sorts of evil people come in every stripe, Mr. Shea. If you think the media didn't cover a story enough, blame the media. The Gay Mafia doesn't own Fox News. I hardly see how the gay community's level of outrage is going to substantively affect the number of Nexis hits Andrew Sullivan gets on any story.
And speaking of perpetuating myths, you have cast gays and Christians as two seemingly mutually-exclusive groups. Millions of gay Christians, would likely take a different point of view. And if you think there aren't Christians out there who advocate violence against gays, then you obviously haven't come face-to-face with Fred Phelps.
I'm quite familiar with Phelps. Once blasted one of his sicko kids for a ridiculous rant against gays. And, of course, he's frequently portrayed as The Face of Christianity by Dan Rather when it comes to some puff piece on the glories of gay sex and they need to show The Opposing View. But if you note, I did not say there are no Christians who are unjust to gays. I said that such Christians are isolated and repudiated by the vast majority of Christians. Meanwhile, crimes like the one against Stachowicz are carefully hushed up and excuses are made. Dunno what Sullivan had to do with it.
And come on: "Millions" of gay Christians? "Millions"?

I think back on my days in the Church, and now I wonder when priests became such insensitive jerks. Mine always seemed so nice, caring, and respectful.
