I don't understand why Bishop O'Malley allowed Kerry and Kennedy to receive communion at his Installation Mass this past summer. I'm not questioning the integrity or the holiness of Bishop O'Malley. I just think that would have been the perfect time to do what he needs to do. If not then, when?

Of course, if O'Malley or Burke were withholding communion from a politican on grounds of racism, Kerry couldn't get in line fast enough.
Abortion is different because his political base is pro-death.

BTW - for anyone who doesn't know just what a weathervane Kerry really is, here's two letters Kerry sent out to constituents during the first Gulf War:
"Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition ... to the early use of military force by the US against Iraq. I share your concerns. On January 11, I voted in favor of a resolution that would have insisted that economic sanctions be given more time to work and against a resolution giving the president the immediate authority to go to war."
--letter from Senator John Kerry to Wallace Carter of Newton Centre, Massachusetts, dated January 22 [1991]
"Thank you very much for contacting me to express your support for the actions of President Bush in response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. From the outset of the invasion, I have strongly and unequivocally supported President Bush's response to the crisis and the policy goals he has established with our military deployment in the Persian Gulf."
--Senator Kerry to Wallace Carter, January 31 [1991]

Why does separation of Church and State morph into separation of conscience and action?

You're right Tess, that is the way "they" see it.
When Kerry says he's not allowed to "use" his Catholicism as a legislator, that's exactly what he's doing.
The only way this "wall of separation" contrived from first amendment would even be violated would be if a law were written that read "Abortion is prohibited in keeping with the Magesterium of the Catholic Church".
It's amazing isn't it? The platform from which these blowhards speak wouldn't survive the premises taught in Civics 101.

What's his view the other way around, i.e. forcing Catholic institutions to insure abortions, contraceptions and such?

Whenever you here someone say"....well of course, you know, I used to be an altar boy until I was twelve..." - as if that fact imbued them miraculously with the full knowledge of the deposit of Faith - you can guarentee that the next sentence will :
(A) provide you with a personal slanted view on what the Church teaches, and
(B) provide you with a justification - however nausious - as to why that someone diverts from the Orthodx teaching of the Church.
We have a couple of them in positions of power over here, and it makes me sick.

Archbishop Burke, please....(ringring) Hello, Ray? Sean in Boston again. Well, he did it....Remember our first phone call....Yeah, about our senator running for president....Said some stuff about when he was an altar boy at 12 and fond memories....What's that?....If he wants to revert back to that age let him take 6th grade CCD classes and see how he likes it? Now waitaminnit Ray, he's a grown man and a senator. How am I expected to...What's that? Do I really want a red hat?....You say it's what they expect of you in St. Louis....It's what they expect of me, too....Oh, c'mon Ray, now just what do you mean by Get With The Program? (click) Hello? Ray?"

"Why does separation of Church and State morph into separation of conscience and action?"
Don't you understand? Its not seperation of Church and State, its seperation of Church and EVERYTHING! No decision can be informed by religion at all ever! I go to a Catholic university, and people complain that the Church's teachings on contraceptives force them to walk ALL THE WAY to the Safeway across the street to get their condoms! See, the Church needs to be seperate from Catholic schools!
See, there can't be any thought of religion in your head when you make a decision. If you're a Catholic politician you HAVE to be pro-choice, or else you're imposing religion on everyone! And if you're not religious, then why do you care about abortion anyway? What's your problem?
I have to say, this culture is too messed up. When being "pro-choice" is considered the normal, sane position. Any deviation from it may be due to personal, private religious concerns, but you need to put that aside when voting.
People tend to assume that your entire life, except maybe an hour on sunday, should be devoid of religious concerns. If its any other way, then you must be some kind of religious freak!
