Oddly, I've noticed that very dynamic in my relationship with a Serbian Orthodox friend. My idea is that it's us against the Holy Rollers and the next thing you know I'm listening to the sacking of Constantinople or the atrocities of the Croats. Sigh...History can be one cruel mistress.

(tiny Incredible Shrinking Man voice): "he'p me! he'p meeee!"

Actually, there are slightly more than 100 of us, and I have photographic evidence! These were taken at a pro-US, pro-Iraq war rally in downtown Toronto in April 2002 (shut up, it was a freak snow fall, I swear! It really isn't like this all the time, let alone in April)
http://216.121.255.67/gallery/ ra...rallyforamerica

But even if there were a few thousand people at this thing, the city's population is 2.5 million at least.

I meant April 2003 of course. sorry.

How many Canadians have you met who expressed loathing for Americans? No such loathing is actually felt by average Canadians. Secular liberals in Canada, who have an even more disproportionate influence in the media than they do in the U.S., will express loathing of the more religious and conservative elements of American society, just as secular liberals in the U.S. do (although less vehemently). I admit to feeling resentment about Americans over one thing; the idea of secular judicial activism disguised as interpretation of human rights. This is an idea we adopted from you (contrary to our traditions) in 1981, with disastrous results of the kind familiar to Americans.

John,

Keep quiet about that or we will have to send in the Panzer division.

All that maple syrup will be MINE!!!!

"Secular liberals in Canada, who have an even more disproportionate influence in the media than they do in the U.S..."

John, we have just had a federal election that proves the terms "secular liberals" and "average Canadians" are synonymous. They would rather elect demonstrated criminals than even the softly moderate conservatives.

The invasion thing is funny too. I know people who really believe the US is just waiting to annex Canada. But ask yourselves: why would the US need 31 million *more* Democrats? Not to mention taking on the fun of dealing with Quebec.

Hilary: The Annex. You poor dear. Some friends just bought into that fancy Loretto condo (yes folks, it used to belong to the nuns). And they'll have guess who as a neighbour? Margaret Atwood!! If only they'd known before signing the contract.
So many NDP signs on your lawns last week it looked like somebody had sprayed Agent Orange everywhere.
At least Olivia Chow-cheskuwe lost. (Excuse the in jokes, folks).

Tell your little friends that I for one don't want to annex Our Lady of the Snows. I want to loot and pillage her, then herd the survivors into concentration camps where they will be fed nothing but Big Macs and fries until they expire from the horror.

As long as we keep Lord Stanley's cup safe and sound down here, no need to invade.

who were slavering at the possibility of coming up here and taking all our trees and water.

As a Californian, I definitely agree. We do, or at least the few of us who understand the nature of the power dynamic between Canada and us. Whenever the Angelinos steal our water, we think, "hmmm. Canada doesn't seem to be doing anything with their natural resources."

I also second Sandra's idea. We certainly don't want them voting down here.

Antiamericanism is almost the State Religion here. The Canadian Left is not so much socialist as it is "all Americans bad; all anti-americans good". The Canadian Right(what there is of it) is more monarchist and pro Britain than it is american-friendly.

I don't think an invasion would work. Quebec still hasn't forgiven English Canada for the Siege of Quebec City in 1763!

I went to a wedding in Ontario a couple of years ago, and was amazed at how obsessed all the Canadians were with their American neighbors. It was bizarre, since we Americans don't spend any time dwelling on Canada. It was like they had no identity if they couldn't compare themselves to us...

Kathy - is ``the Loretto condo'' the former Loretto College residence at 70 St. Mary Street? I lived there, my first year in college.

BTW I lived in Toronto 1971-78 and the anti-Americanism was just as strong back then (though possibly I was getting it in a more concentrated form - this was U of Toronto, after all). In those days it was all about Vietnam. I suppose the rationale has changed over the years, but the sneering and condescension are the same as ever.

My husband's and my 30th anniversary college reunion is next June. He wants to go; I don't. Maybe I'll end up going but just go hang out at the ROM and the Bata Shoe Museum.

I'd be all in favour of annexation if you guys did it the way the Babylonians did the Jews. I think the Canadians have given God more provocation for a sharp lesson. Invasion, deportation and life as a slave nation. That'd learn us.

Here's one Canadian who doesn't hate Americans -- I don't know very many, but I am married to one ... All my life, I have admired and loved the ideals that the US was built on, even tho at times I've disagreed with the policies of some administrations (both Reps and Dems). But I believe, as Lincoln said, that the US remains "the last, best hope of earth", and my perennial image of America is that of the Statue of Liberty, a beacon to the "tired, ... poor ... homeless, tempest-tossed" who seek refuge on her shores. May God bless and strengthen the United States, and all her citizens. No matter what you may hear, there are a lot of Canadians who feel as I do -- they just don't get much publicity is all. Happy Fourth of July, everyone!

"At least Olivia Chow-cheskuwe lost."

yes, funny isnt' it? I went to the polling station to reject my ballot, (it's the only option for Canadian pro-lifers in 90% of the ridings) and when I was walking back home in a rather tense frame of mind, I was sorely, I mean 8sorely* tempted to go about with a felt tip marker and write under her name the information: "...is a baby-eating goblin" but I thought the taste for baby flesh is so common around here it would only encourage them.

Anne, you know, I don't think that's the spot somehow. I got the feeling it was a bit north of there, and I can't find the exact address on the web.

The ROM is being completely made over by one of those Famous Architects. The "artist's rendition" of the finished product looks like a stick of butter being humped by a crystal hedgehog.

Of course, we are still crawling with Vietnam desterters who are the carriers of much of the hatred.

And Hilary: can you believe Layton won? He looks like The Cop in a porn movie. I keep expecting to here chessy canned disco music everytime he comes on tv. At least Mr. Chow (as they call him in Chinatown) will be going to Ottawa alone.

Half my family is from Newfoundland and they love the Americans. Same with most of the Atlantic provinces as far as I can tell. The problem is in the Canadian big cities... any relative I have who lives in one (mostly Toronto) thinks we are rubes who are self absorbed and oblivious to the fact that there are other nations besides the USA. OTOH, when I think about it, the rellies who don't like Americans are ALL lefties. Every last one.

I second the comment by Colleen about Newfoundland. My sainted mother was a Newfie. My father met and married her while he was in the Air Force in the 50s. I was born in the US but spent most of my first four years in Newfoundland. My great Uncle Bill, a World War II veteran, used to call me "that dirty Yank!" and I would refer to him as "that dirty Newf!" Kidding by relatives aside, the Newfies I knew had a great fondness for the States, just as I will always love St. John's and the wonderful people who live there.

"We are the Torontorg... You will be assimilated.."
ANGLOMAN 2

Hi Colleen, what part of Newfoundland are your folks from? I grew up in the West End of St. John's. My Grandmother operated Reddy's Confectionery, and my Mom took over the business after nanny died. I went to Holy Heart of Mary and MUN, then moved to Montreal later to do a music degree at McGill. And Donald McClarey, thanks for your lovely comments about my home town. As I said in another post, even though I've lived "away" for a long time, I still consider Newfoundland my real home.

There was no seige of Québec city by English Canda in 1763! Happened in 1759 and it was the British. The only Canadian city that can best Toronto in anti -american sentiment is Montréal. In fact, it's about the only area of 'expertise' in which Ville marie still surpases the Queen City!

Went out to breakfast with some co-workers this morning and ordered something very light......thought it wise. After a few sips of coffee it starts! Bush is like Hitler! Bush is a marionette, Bush is a puppet, Bush is a dupe. Americans are like nazis, Americans are fascists, Americans are arrogant, Americans are aggressors......etc.

Very light breakfast, indeed! That way there's a minimum of mess when you heave! In fact, the term "heave and leave" now sums up my attitude towards Canada.

Don't believe me? Did anyone see John Ralston Saul with that smug smile below the brim of that absurd pretentious hat in Ottawa yesterday?
