But he's still going to be on the show on which he pulled the forged documents stunt, and he's moving back to the Sunday 60 Minutes as well.

And at 73, how much longer could he have stayed anyway.

I don't care for the guy either, but all the self-congratulatory stuff around the blogosphere from those who supposedly "took him down" is a bit much, just imho.

I think he, Brokaw, and Jennings have been largely irrelevant for years now. So let's act like it.

If his presence had become irrelevant, surely his absence will be.

At this point, I feel sorry for Dan. Who was quick to note to his loyal serv- uh, the newsroom staff yesterday that his departure comes on the 24th anniversary of replacing Uncle Walter. Only the Viacom suits twisting the knife in his back- Dan clearly wanted to ride off into the sunset at Year 25. Instead, kicked to the curb on W. 57th St. prematurely. Do not underestimate the pressure by CBS affiliate general managers- and/or Dennis Swanson, head honcho of the owned-and-operated stations- on the corporate suits for this division. Many of the local GMs would draw more viewers at that time period with old Popeye cartoons or exercise device infomercials.

I rather like Alterman's ("Altercation" at the MSNBC website)take:

"It was Rather's sloppiness and arrogance vis-a-vis the National Guard story that removed Bush'a still unexplained absences from his Guard duty from public scrutiny, giving the President another of his myriad free passes on issues of simple morality as he hypocritically preaches what he only pretends to practice."

And, before you ask, no, I did not vote for Sen Kerry. I didn't vote for the President either. The guidelines for thoughtful Catholic voters clearly give me the option of voting for neither. Kerry is a pro-abort and Bush and his cohorts turn my stomach. I am a man without a party.
