In graduate school, at Alfred University in about 1988, one of my collegues organized a group purchase of 250 pounds of silly putty. The idea was to drop it off the roof of the engineering building and we were to guess if it would bounce or splat. In typical fashion, I proposed a third alternative. I postulated that the ball of silly putty would neither bounce nor splat but would shatter. On the appointed day, the group managed to get the blob of silly putty to the roof, still more or less round. With a mighty heave, they pushed in over the side where it fell three stories to the gound and............................................sha
