Find the nearest parish run by the Fraternity of St. Peter, the Institute of Christ the King, Sovereign Priest, or the Canons Regular of the New Jerusalem, and attend the traditional Latin Mass.

You won't have to worry about any of that nonsense and you will find your faith greatly enriched.

All of the above orders are authorized to offer the traditional Mass by the Pope.

If you can't find one locally, move to St. Louis and attend St. Francis de Sales Oratory.

Mary Our Queen, in Peachtree Corners, is less than 30 minutes from St. Ann's on a Sunday morning. Father Dye's Masses are always reverent and "by the book." I enjoy his homilies (even if they are too long!!!! -- just in case he reads this thread), though of course few priests are such great homilists that they can please everybody. In any case, Fr. Dye does not view pleasing everybody as his job. He takes Catholic teaching and his responsibility to impart it very seriously, as do our deacons. He resisted youth Masses for a long time, but has relented with the stipulation (enforced) that they be done in a reverent manner and in keeping with liturgical norms.

St. Brigid's in Alpharetta has a solid Mass and the first statue to Blessed Teresa of Calcutta in the nation!

Mariah Carey? That's not mere liturgical abuse. That's a violation of the Geneva Convention.

At a Life Teen Mass that is what you are going to get. It is like going to see "The Saw II" and complaining afterwards about all the gore.

Of course, if it was sufficiently billboarded beforehand that this was going to be the Lifeteen Christmas Eve Mass, then less blame attaches.

As Mark suggested, the parish might offer more acceptable Masses at different times.

...INsufficiently billboarded...

I can relate, unfortunately. The good (or bad news is) it could be worse: Catholic Church Conservation. This blog documents various kinds of Mass and Church abuses--warning: not for the faint of heart.

You poor man. This is a great fear of mine, that I will find myself in one of these wastelands with no decent Mass to attend.

Holy Spirit would be a good choice and only 10 minutes from Marietta. Traditional church architecture and Msgr. Dillon is old school.

"...a few thousand people emerge from purgatory."
That's hilarious.
Well put!

It probably shouldn't have made me laugh, but it did. LOL Mariah Carey hahhaa Johnny Cash! What a star-studded event!

I hope you find something better next yr :D

Hahahaha.

Praise God that there were hundreds of people at mass!! And thank goodness they were enjoying themselves and living community and celebrating the birth of our Lord together. I too love a traditional mass... but I am so thankful that our young people are given the opportunity to celebrate mass in such a way that energizes them, and encourages them to see the true presence, and the gift of the church.

I agree with Tim: attend a Latin Mass, and the gates of Heaven shall be opened unto you. You'll come to understand sanskrit, and gain the ability to divide by zero. If your family is inconsiderate enough to live somewhere without a Latin Mass, tell them to move or disown them.

Mark,

I visited my hometown in Ohio and was able to see a rousing production of liturgical dance, so I feel your pain.

"Mariah Carey? That's not mere liturgical abuse. That's a violation of the Geneva Convention."
LOLOLOLOLOL!!!

Not familiar with the Marietta area but it looks like you're getting good suggestions here. I attended the Midnight Mass at the Basilica-Cathedral here in Edmonton, Alberta, and it was a mix of good and bad - the homily by the archbishop was excellent (and ended with his usual, and good, vocations pep talk, in which he gives out his phone number), but most of the music was just terrible, especially the setting of the Ordinary, which was based on Christmas hymns. No - it was really bad. I know at least a couple of other Edmonton parishes were doing it this year as well, so I suspect some of you all in the States may have suffered with it as well . . . no liturgical dancers (or pop singers of any kind) though, thank God. I do like Johnny Cash's ruminations on the Almighty, but not during the Sacred Liturgy.

Spephen,
I agree that Tim's suggestion (apparently seriously offered) that Mark's corespondent move to another city in order to attend Latin Mass was over the top. But your nasty sarcastic response was uncalled for.
Besides, we do have the Tridentine Mass available in Atlanta -- I can't recall which parish, but one has such Masses every week having been granted permission by Archbishop Donoghue (now retired from the Atlanta See).

Anonymous was me. Sorry.

The Fraternity parish near Atlanta is St Francis de Sales in Mableton.

It used to be that Ed Bolduc and his band at St. Ann's was one of the leading lights of the Life Teen movement - the few times I was able to go, the mass (not Christmas) was really good. Bolduc's people were phenomenally talented. However, that's been ten years ago. Speaking as someone who was part of the "Life Teen" band at a church in Georgia - we tried to stick to familiar Christmas carols (when else were we going to sing them?)when we were asked to do a Christmas mass, or at least something fairly reverent, like Amy Grant's Breath of Heaven. I'm sorry to hear that the experience turned out so poorly. One of the big problems for all Life Teen bands is whether the music becomes "performance" rather than liturgical - sounds like it's headed the former route at St. Ann's, at least at that mass.

It might help to keep firmly in mind that one assists at mass, not in order to be liturgically entertained, but to encounter Christ.

If one focuses on him, and not the human performance of the liturgy, then every mass will contribute to one's peace rather than subtract from it.

God Bless

But it is much more difficult to concentrate on and encounter Christ when the liturgy is little more than a circus. That's the difficulty with these types of Masses. And while it is certainly good that people are there for the sacrifice of Mass, merely having warm bodies in a Church is not in and of itself a positive good.

Go to the link below and read about the Mummers' Mass in Philadelphia - Archbishop Rigali's ardhdiocese.

It's very upsetting to see Johnny Cash dragged into such infamy. Er, again. Without meaning to, that is. Like, by other people.

Johnny Cash is complicated. :/

My brother goes to St. Brigid's in Alpharetta, which is not far away. Great choir and organ, though the liturgy is rather Irish (rushed through at a couple of points).

Does anyone know anything about St. Joseph's in Marietta? I attended school there (and was an alter boy), but that was about 35 years ago. I have plenty of fond memories, including some that I recognize now as being "in the spirit of Vatican II."

Having read about the mummers Mass I'd say that the Marietta, Georgia Mass wasn't all that bad.

Dymphna,
I know it sounds nuts...but it is PHILLY. Clubs of men- (and women for the last 15 or so years) spend a year planning, practicing, and costume making and fundraising to march up Broad Street New Years Day. The parade begins at 9:AM and lasts until about 7:PM- it is much shorter now that the Fancy Divisions (men wearing float sized costumes with lots of feathers) are now judged at the Convention Center. I think they made the change the year the parade lasted about 15 hours! Only the Comics and the String Bands are in the actual parade.... Very elaborate costumes (lots and lots of sequins and feathers), props and sets that they haul along with them.... It is a little nuts now that I really think about it. They "strut" - and there are a lot of Banjos and Sax's… That Mass must be quite a celebration.

Any parish that allows that sort of stuff to happen most likely isn't trustworthy for other Masses, unless you personally know that a specific priest is of a different sort.

Add 15 to 20 minutes to the times people suggested above to get around Metro Atlanta, just to be safe. Holy Spirit is a beautiful church. I attended Mass there on the Feast of The Immaculate Conception. Of course it is the new one that replaced the old one where my wife attended RICA. A huge improvement by the way. Msgr. Dillon was there 17 years ago. I wonder how he manages that?

St. Joseph's is allright - as long as you avoid the LifeTeen Mass (ugh). But they are plenty of other options that I find a little less Broadway. Been going there about a year and a half since it is about 5 minutes from where we live.

Does it bother anyone that the founder of Life Teen has been charged w/ sexual misconduct?

I haven't been to either of the churches in Marietta proper, but St Vincent de Paul in Dallas and St Theresa in Douglasville have decent liturgies with not much liturgical fidget as of the last time I visited friends & relations there.

How sad. Good luck in finding a Catholic church down there in Marietta. BUT, my dear friend, PLEASE WRITE YOUR BISHOP AND TELL HIM EXACTLY WHAT YOU WITNESSED! Don't assume that he knows. He probably has an inkling but if all the dolts in the parish are cool with Father Funk's Johnny Cash homilies the bishop may never receive complaints from anyone there. It's your duty to at least file a complaint of sorts. Don't let the dissenters run you out without a fight!!!!!!!

Hi I am a United Pentecostal from Canada and verry happy with my life as a saint of God.

Did you know that when God's fills His people with the Holy Ghost they react in different ways because the presence of the Lord is so strong and powerful that people just want to go lose is the presence of the Lord? Some people dance, some cry, some shout, some laugh, some run, some fall to the ground.

Here is another thing, did you know that the baptism of the Holy Ghost is real?

Acts 2:38 - And peter said unto them, "Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall recieve the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Acts 19:1-6 - and it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at corinth, paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certin desiples, He said unto them, "Have ye recieved the Holy Ghost since ye believed?" And they said unto him, "We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost."
And he said unto them, "Unto what then were ye baptized?" And they said, "Unto John's baptism," then said Paul, "John verily baptized with the baptism of repentence, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus." When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon then, the Holy Ghost came on them; they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Paul asked the fello deciples that he met in ephesis if they recieved the Holy Ghost since they belived. Well I wonder why he would say that? Maby because since Jesus had accended to heaven He was glorified and God told Paul the new name and power of heaven. That is why he baptized the deciple in ephesis in the name of Christ Jesus, not the father, son, and the Holy Spirit; but in the only name that matters which is Jesus Christ. I never believed in that untill I all of a sudden recieved the Holy Ghost after I was baptized in the Name of Jesus. Is that amaizing!! (Amen!!)

When you read your Bible you can never go wrong.

This is all in the 19th chapter of the book of Acts. And ofcourse it is in the Bible.
