I'm still praying she'll come to her senses in the next few days/weeks...however long she has until that child is born...and leave Tom.
Otherwise, I have a gut feeling she - at the age of 26 - is going to let out a big ol' yell during the labor and delivery and Tom will lose his mind and dump her. Which would be fine. Anything to get her out of his clutches.
When I was young, I wanted to be an actress.
I much prefer being a non-famous, but faithful, Catholic.
Hollywood tends to rot most people at their very core.

If Tom dumps her, he'll still have a never-ending supply of co-stars he can hook up with to help promote his movies. You'd think the young ladies would glance at his record before committing.

In Hollywood, an actress has about five years on the "A" list before the casting directors move her over to the character roles. The men can stay on top for decades, long past their physical ability to remain credible in the action roles they're given (Harrison Ford, I'm looking at you).
Starlets who therefore hook their wagons to a star's appeal to boost their careers are therefore signing on to a short-term contract.

I don't think Katie signed on with Tom to boost her career - granted, I don't know her, but her star had been rising *until* she hooked with Tom & Scientology. Suddenly before the year was out, she had lost two plum roles.
She was to be the lead in a movie on the sad life of Edie Sedgwick. The makers of the movie had openly courted her. It was to be a "breakthrough" role for her. She was set to take it, had been in negotiations, was openly excited about it. Then after meeting Tom, she was squirreled away to a Scientlogy boot camp for awhile, (a period of time where neither her parents nor friends knew precisely where she was) came back, fired her agent, managers, and everyone who has nursed her career for years, some of whom were old friends, and hired Sci. approved agents, and was assigned handlers to accompany her wherever she traveled, describing themselves as new "friends". Suddenly and abruptly she does a 180 degree turn and says she says she's really *not* interested in the role, that the role is not right for her. It was said among people close to her that Tom C and her new Scientology team disapproved of the role. Scient. of course is very sensitive about how their celebrities are portrayed, and Edie Sedgwick the heroin-addict was not a role the Narconon-fronting "Church" wanted a member to be associated with.
Tom C said it was her decision to drop the role, but her new "team" had openly said they did not think the role was right for her.
Likewise, her role in the successful Batman movie of last year has been recast for the sequel in large part because the producers behind the movie were fed up with accommodating the Scien. watchers who were assigned to travel with her on PR appearances, as well as being fed-up with the Scient. handlers attempts to use her PR appearances as an opportunity to for PR about her & Tom & Scient. instead of the film.
Plus, she was a rare individual in Hollywood in that she was universally known to be a sweet-natured, un-cynical girl, in a world of jaded cynics. And she was someone in Hollywood who had openly called herself a practicing Catholic, spoke favorably of her Catholic school experience and upbringing. She lived with her parents, wanting to save herself for marriage during her previous 5 year engagement which fell apart just a few months before Tom called her up to "interview" her.
Again, I wouldn't know, but the motivation of self-promotion doesn't seem to fit - especially in light of lost roles in a short period of time. I fear it may be more of very immature notions of love and romance, perhaps lingering effects of the just failed engagement - plus whatever weirdness went on during her "boot-camp" experience, which resulted aferwards in behavior that close friends from her hometown described as uncharacteristic and troubling.
But whatever the reason, it's tragic to see a soul - especially one with the above reputation, who always spoke positively of her Catholic faith, fall for the pseudo-psycho-religious-babble of an insidious cult. Even if her new "friends" see to it that she gets some future roles (hey, maybe in a "Battlefield Earth" sequel…) it's a genuine tragedy in the making.
I think she & her family need our prayers, of course Tom C too - not to mention their child.

Yeah, but when they get divorced, who's going to blame her? Best career move Nicole Kidman ever made.

Henry o, that is a fascinating and very said assessment of what's happened to Katie H. One thing: I never said she did it to boost her career. I tried to say he did it to boost his next Mission Impossible sequel. I was addressing Tom's well documented habit of developing "romances" with his co-stars to promote his movies. One of those "romances" actually became a marriage: to Nicole Kidman (Jon W: agreed on that), and then there was the whirlwind "romance" with Penelope Cruz (question: if they had gotten hitched, which one would have changed the spelling of their last name?) that occured right around the time he was promoting Vanilla Sky.
Tom C. is shameless and slimy, and with Katie has sunk to what is an all-time low for him: basically kidnapping and enslaving Katie to promote not just a movie, but his satanic cult, as well as to quell thopse pesky rumors that he, um, putts from the rough.

Putts from the rough. I like that.
Miss Holmes also apparently forewent the opportunity to be a Bond girl.
Speaking as a long-time Bond fan and pig, that is a tragedy.

I really, really feel sorry for Katie. She was indeed a sweet natured girl who seems to have been hideously brain-washed by the diabolical cult of Scientology with Tom Cruise working as Satan's agent. What is worse, she is being mentally abused by her 'fiancee' and nobody around her is doing anything to help her.
Please pray for her, for Tom, and of course, for their baby, who will come into the world with a very sad future: a complete nut for a father and a submissive, brainwashed mother who is unable to do anything to save herself or her baby from his father's influence. Sad.

Hi Sean - gotcha. And I'd agree with you that for Tom, I think it is for PR - since his couch-jumping declarations of hey-gosh-I'm-in-love came according to a number of articles only after he'd already unsuccessfully gone through a Sciento. approved list of available young up & coming Hollywood starlets, including the then 18 year old Lindsay Lohan. Scarlet Johansson apparently did consent to go out on a date with him, which resulted in her being taken to meet members of the cult at their "Celebrity Center". Upon which, she excused herself and as one friend in an interview put it "got the hell out of there."
But alas for the Holmes family, he eventfully settled upon Katie's name, who apparently did fall for it all - including the line about how one "can be a Catholic and Scient." - which of course doesn't suffer much scrutiny to conclude that's a load of balderdash.
And yes, absolutely pray for that baby! - An anti-cult site gave an exerpt from some of L Ron's writings which cited a primary objective of his was to bring celebrities and children into the cult.
The article Mark linked to in turn linked to one mentioning that Katie has concerns about following Tom's desired Scient.-type birth, and wants it to be in a hospital with ACTUAL doctors on hand. I hope she has enough of herself left to insist upon that - and that that may lead her to open her eyes to a sober examination of where she is heading.

...and reading Scientol.-types births - on the news, they showed Scientlgsts taking 6 foot placards instructing her not to yell or groan during childbirth. Also the baby is not to be touched (I presume allowances are made for FEEDING) or spoken to for 7 days after birth.

not to be touched or spoken to for seven days after birth?????? how is it fed??? OMFG is this not child abuse? Does this make it legal to kill a scientologist if you ever meet one? I most certainly will pray for the baby.
And it looks like Scarlet Johansson had a good head on her shoulders indeed; brains as well as looks.
Henry O, keep us updated of any developments you might come across.

Pardon my observation, but for people who see all kinds of evil in the Hollywood culture (and I agree with that) you seem very informed about the details of the people's lives!
I assume and hope you are also very informed about the details of the lives of more positive personalities...

" ... for people who see all kinds of evil in the Hollywood culture (and I agree with that) you seem very informed about the details of the people's lives!"
Well, if you mean me, I don't recall having said much one way or the other here about whether or not I "see all kinds of evil in the Hollywood culture", but that aside, as a struggling yet active professional actor, the bizarre appeal this completly wacko cult has with many successful actors holds a certain facination with me, and so I tend to read articles I come across related to that subject. As a practicing Catholic, (and about the only one I know in my circles who is both an active performer and an orthodox praticing Catholic), for me the story of the very rare young Hollywood performer who has frequently and openly called herself a practicing Catholic, but who in the blink of an eye becomes swallowed up by this most sinister and insidious of cults, holds a special interest, albeit as an especially tragic tale.
"I assume and hope you are also very informed about the details of the lives of more positive personalities..."
Oh, probably more informed than some and less informed than others, I would guess.
I'm certainly a big fan of the Marx Brothers
"Pardon my observation,"
You are indeed pardoned.
