Well, if Canada insists on becoming so pro-homosexual, maybe the U.S. population will move north.

Is free speech for professors an absolute? Would you support a Catholic university's right to fine, or dismiss, a professor who supports gay rights?

Here's another take on the story from the Halifax Chronicle Record:

C.B. prof suspended for anti-gay protest

SYDNEY -- A Cape Breton University history professor who declared his disgust for homosexuals on his website says he's been suspended by the school for two weeks.

David Mullan, who refused to participate in the external investigation into a complaint by a student, was found guilty of violating the school's discrimination and harassment policy.

The decision could be viewed Friday on Mullan's website.

Student Shane Wallis, the former co-ordinator of the university's Sexual Diversity Centre, launched the complaint.

He claimed Mullan discriminated and harassed the school's lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community in postings on the professor's personal website. The site used to be linked to the university's site.

Investigator Barbara Darby concluded Mullan placed a burden of fear on gays by publicly declaring his contempt and disgust for them.

Darby said Mullan implied that homosexuals engage in deviant behaviour, make disastrous choices, and that homosexuality is "a repudiation of nature and the apotheosis of unbridled desire."

"I conclude that there is sufficient commentary by David Mullan in the website postings, even after they were severed from the (university) web page, to indicate he is making the posting in his capacity as a faculty member and university teacher," concluded Darby.

Brian-
Question 1- yelling 'fire' in a crowded theater is not a Constitutional guarantee, either.
Question 2- Yes. RC universities should not exist as hotbeds of wackiness. Let that happen from the public-funded edjermacation factories.
Issue 3- difference in editorial slants- the one posted by Mark favors the Prof. Dr. Your post does not. Truth does not always exist down the middle. Yours makes the Prof. Dr. look like the Big Bad Wolf. Probably a lone wolf on this campus.

You should hear some of the things that people say about conservatives, Bush, and Catholics at Canadian universities. FYI, I currently attend Laurentian University in Ontario (Go Voyagers!)

Mark, this is only one -- I repeat, one -- Canadian university. There are many, many more throughout the country. In Montreal, there's McGill, Concordia, U of Mtl., UQAM -- that's 4 at least. In every other province there's at least 1 (don't know about the Territories or Iqaluit). My point is that not all Canadian universities are involved in this kind of thing. Anyway, ours is also a free country -- one doesn't have to like Pres. Bush or agree with US policies. I agree that the prof involved took a courageous stand and was treated unfairly -- but it's only ONE freakin' university, not every single one in the country. Stop with the overly broad generalizations, already!
