*starts digging foxhole before the accreditation flame shells come in.* "Dr." James White pray for us!

It must be said that many cranks have legitimate Ph.D.'s...

So, I get that this guy is quite vocal. I also understand that there are some people who might be swayed by his arguments.

But seriously, why does anyone even care about this guy and what he says? I mean, sure, you can have fun picking his arguments to pieces, but in the end it seems the old adage applies: "Never wrestle with a pig; you get covered in mud and the pig loves it"

Mark, you may be unaware that "accreditation" is just one small part of the Global Jewish Conspiracy.

We think its the same place we earned our Ph.D.s was in sacred music.

We certainly didn't major in grammar, however.

The respect for authority is so prevalent in this country that we must ridicule anyone who has a degree or authority lest we doubt our extraordinary wisdom that derives from our ordinariness. People have been cowed into fear from academics from the pulpit, USCCB, and Vatican to the point where they won't even consider opposing views. You would swear that it wasn't apparent to everyone that Ph.Ds put their pants on one leg at a time the way society bows to their credentials. The idea that anyone with credentials should be prudently listened to is anathema in our culture.

The preceding contains bits of sarcasm.

Whatever one's views of Mr. Sungenis, he certainly is not lacking in theological education. He is degreed from George Washington University and Westminster Theological Seminary. He has more education than the people mocking him, but let that be no hinderance to the mocking. It hasn't stopped people from calling Pope Benedict an idiot in regards to his view on the war and Israel's action in Lebannon.

The man is an utter fraud.

reminds me of "Dr." Gene Ray

Please, let's not forget that Bob has done some truly laudatory work in the past. "Not by Faith Alone," while somewhat mistaken on the subject of "Works of the Law," is nevertheless a phenomenal work of scholarship, and is by Bob Sungenis. I've read some doctoral dissertations that had less meat in them than NbFA does.

Somewhere along the line, Bob lost a screw. It's unfortunate, but it happens. He deserves our compassion, not our mockery.

A reasonable argument may be made that someone who pushes the agenda he pushes may deserve mockery. He puts himself out there and won't take admonishment. We don't need people thinking his work is Catholic in these regards.

Sometimes someone can get so out of bounds as to compromise even their good work. IMO, Sungenis is in that territory. I could never recommend him again for fear that people might then be unwittingly led to his ugly fascinations.

It's a sickness.

"Somewhere along the line, Bob lost a screw. It's unfortunate, but it happens. He deserves our compassion, not our mockery."

I'm convinced he is bipolar. I hope he gets on the right meds soon. Those writing these articles, who were personal friends, ought to suggest a psych eval, not better editing.

We should all be praying for him. DelRayVA is right.

Didn't Sungenis appeal to Catholics United for the Faith as fair-minded in his case? Didn't he say that they pulled down their link to the Sungenis and Jews essay because they agreed it was unfair?

That would seem to fly in the face of this link at CUF:

CUF is not one to get involved in things like this unless there is a serious problem.
