>>>Is there a Catholic football team?

Notre Dame, man. Everybody knows that - including people like myself who know little else about football.

Wasn't there a Catholic joke way back when that went something like this:

In Catholicism we believe in:

One God,
Two Testaments in the Bible,
Three Persons of the Trinity,
Four Evangelists,
Five Wounds of Christ,
Six Precepts of the Church,
Seven Sacraments,
Eight Beatitudes,
Nine Choirs of Angels,
Ten Commandments

-and-

Twelve Apostles.

So what is Eleven?

The starting lineup for Notre Dame.

In Jesu et Maria,

So is the rule that every Roman Catholic football team must wear gold as part of their uniform official or simply a guideline?

First-

Real Catholics prefer college football.

Second -

Notre Dame Fighting Irish perpetuates stereotypes about our fellow Catholics. Notre Dame also employs Fr. McBrien, therefor, it's claim to being Catholic is dubious.

Penn State is the team Catholics should root for. Joe Paterno - his name is very papal. He is the product of a Jesuit education and is versed in Dante, Virgil and classical Greek literature. He translated the Aneid to English at his Catholic High School - Brooklyn Prep. Finally, is he not imitating the fine example of the respect for life from conception to naturaly death that JPII set? Joe is 80 years old and will be the head coach for the 42nd season this year. He is anachronistic and many have questioned his fitness for the job but he keeps on working diligently and showing us that life is precious.

Notre Dame also employs Fr. McBrien, therefor, it's claim to being Catholic is dubious.

By your logic: The Catholic Church still employs Fr. McBrien as a priest, therefore its claim to being Catholic is dubious.

I was having some fun. Clearly this whole thread is toungue in cheek.

Lighten up!

Rosemarie,

Very droll! However, respectfully I submit that "Notre Dame" should be replaced with "BC" (Boston College) ...

Football? Phttt! In Indiana, God is round, orange, and inflatable. Alas, our local cult attracts fewer and fewer devotees since the glorious days of the single class state high school basketball tournament. Another example of modern decadence.

Um...The Saints, anyone???

Oh, and Who Dat?!?

Well, I have no google or blogger account, so I cannot post there. To quote a certain Episcopalian: "Well, spit".

Anyway, surely the old St. Louis Cardinals would be an appropriate team for Catholics. After all, the Good Lord knows they never won much, and they were at the gateway of the East. (Yeah, I know they call it the gateway to the West, but just turn around and you're heading East, right?) St Louis, Cardinals, wearing red!! Obviously, this was the truly the team that Catholics should worship, umm, support. And now, they are a part of the great football diaspora--wandering in the desert. So very sad (sigh).

Anything but American football lol.

Anyone for a game of Rugby?
What? What's Rugby?

Aaagghhh!!! Forget it.

ND? BC? Since Yankee football is about as exciting as watching two mules tussle over a turnip, call me doubtful on both choices.

ROLL TIDE!!!

ND certainly has a claim to Catholic Football - its last few seasons have been purgatory on earth. It doesn't get any more Catholic than that.

Notre Dame is the only team a Catholic can root for. And beyond that, Catholics should really only root for teams in a truly Catholic sport, i.e. soccer.

Hokie,
My study of canon law suggests that it is a guidline only. But we Catholics take guidelines, and special teams, very seriously.

Nick,
Orthodox Catholics prefer high school football.
And da Bears.

Catholics root for baseball, a sport in which reason and moderated strength is paramount, and ancient tradition controls everyone's deeds - like in the seventh-inning stretch.

But I really want to play rugby.

I think it is obvious why the Cardinals from the old Catholic city of St. Louis wore red. To name a football team "Princes of the Church" would have been too cumbersome. Unfortunately after leaving St. Louis they played many years at Sundevil Stadium. That can't be good. On the other hand, ASU, whose stadium that is, has a larger Catholic student population than does Notre Dame.
