Can't really get too excited about Leno; not even John Paul the Great peddled NFP as the 8th Sacrament nor the 11th Commandment.

No, Leno certainly isn't exciting in and of himself. You don't seem too excited about Natural Family Planning, either,Father. I was interested to see if your sermon was less loaded than your comment about "not even John Paul the Great" and NFP as the "8th Sacrament"--which I don't believe it is--but the clip that played was just fuzz and about 10 seconds long. Do you have the text?

From my (newly updated) "About" section on my blog: I wish to make clear that this blog is titled "Natural Family Planning" not because I believe NFP solves all ills and is the "8th Sacrament," but because it is a tremendous blessing in the lives of those who choose to use it for various reasons (NOT as "Catholic Birth Control), including for treating women's wellness issues, treating infertility, achieving pregnancy and postponing pregnancy for just, grave, and serious reasons. I certainly advocate innovative promotion of NFP for the purpose of getting a foot in the door to a secular audience, and I am willing to dialogue with people about this issue, welcoming visitors of all sorts to my blog, but I never, NEVER will compromise the truth and fullness of the teaching of the Church.

Heard this before. This one in the Homepage was pretty good but didn't work the first time I clicked it.

Doesn't exactly speak of an "NFP cult" but is more even handed.
Harry Crocker once had a tongue in check piece for the old Crisis magazine and some people really missed the point and went cuckoo.

Better communication by discussing ... mucous ?
How did our great grand parents ever do it??

Anon, do you know who the homilist is?

Nevermind, found it. Do you have a link to the Crisis article, or at least commentary referring to it?

One of the homilies is from Fr. Chad Ripperger sp? a very well respected professor among theologians in Rome though he now teaches in the Midwest. A real heavyweight who also has a sense of humor. The comment about people in the African bush not knowing NFP really cracked my husband and me up.

We too had been practitioners. Taught it briefly, although we now wish we taught it incorrectly Got two beautiful kids and stopped to keep the big house, vacations, and fancy cars. As kids got to be more and more unpractical impractical and we settled in as a deliberately small family, we gave in and he was snipped. It's a decision we have long regretted but like many people, the NFP mentality lead us toward it.

Sadly, our children aren't even interested in marriage although they remain good chaste kids. And for that we are thankful though we'll never be real grandparents to anyone.

The Crisis website went down long ago but Crocker's article ''Use NFP, it Doesn't Work'' has been preserved several places.

It is tongue in check but shows the NFP crowd really hasn't thought this through very well.

Fr. Chad Ripperger mentioned above has tackled this issue seriously for some time. I've read his articles in Homiletic + Pastoral Review where he has made the most converts among the laity * I count myself. He uses very well sourced information from popes old and new. I highly recommend his work on this topic.

it is very common for couples who get pregnant a decade after their last NFP birth to get their tubes tied.

NFP is not equal to contraception and the Church approves the method if not always the motives.

NFP couples are more open to life than contraceptors but not much.

great discussion!

Mary

I think the OTHER sermon which was linked was even better. My husband and I just nodded silently to each other as Father explained how the NFP mentality takes the Church's teaching on marriage and turns it on its head.
