"...having the Swiss Guard run him through with pikes and defeat the evil of abortion the neocon way."

Not to be irreverent, but I would pay good money to see that!

One of my friends has similar sentiments. He said just last week, "Hey, wouldn't it be sweet if when Iran's president goes to shake the prime minister of Israel's hand, the prime minister whips out a hand dagger and gouges the creep's heart out?"

Sweet indeed my friend, sweet indeed.

Of course, this is coming from mwah, who is personally sworn to pacifism, so it is all in good jest...for now.

Mwuhahahaha!

Aside from all that pesky moral stuff, Obama is actually a big fan of the Catholic church:

George Weigel really did himself a disservice with his remarks.

P,

I find most people are fans of the Catholic Church - when they agree with the Church ahead of time. Then again, I find many Catholics who are the same. It's getting them that takes the whole helping that's the trick.

Out of curiosity, which presidents presented themselves for communion? I didn’t know that happened.

We now credit Obama for deftly handling the Pope forgetting that he did not get where he is by openly speaking his mind. Well, even he has unguarded moments like the on in which he let slip that comment about the economically disenfranchised clinging to guns and religion. What do you suppose he really thinks of Catholicism, besides it having a bunch of registered voters he wants in his column?

I remember reading a story about Pres. Clinton approaching communion on a visit to Africa but I'm not sure about that. Can't even remember if it was during his presidency or not.
I can't imagine Pres. Obama thinking of that specific gift on his own. I wonder who advised him on that? He must of made sure to get good advice. Forgive me for being cynical but with the (imo) tone-deafness surrounding the search for an acceptable ambassador to the Vatican I think he was really concerned with hitting the right "note" with his gift and making nice.

Anon,

I doubt there is any less reason to be cynical about Obama than any other president who meets the Pope.

On a side note, Mrs. Obama actually listend to whomever told her that bare arms are not quite protocol for First Ladies at Papal audiences.

Deo Gratias.

As Lew Rockwell once said, Obama would make an excellent president if the position was "well-wisher-in-chief." Say a prayer for the president, I'm holding out hope that like Nixon going to China, Obama and Sotomayor overturn Roe. Stranger things have happened in history.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurn!

You sound very bitter with the Novak remark. Move on dot org, dude.

On a side note, Mrs. Obama actually listend to whomever told her that bare arms are not quite protocol for First Ladies at Papal audiences.

Someone should tell the Vatican that we in the USA have a Right to Bare Arms.

Rimshot!

Dave,

Pres.& Mrs.Clinton received Communion at a Catholic church in South Africa, which caused a row. Pres. & Mrs. G.W. Bush on the other hand showed respect for the Church's rule and received a blessing with their arms folded.

Thank you. Something rang a bell, but I couldn't remember or find anything specific.

This may have been mentioned here before, but today's Drudge Report features an article explaining why Obama represents American Catholics better than the Pope. I'd love your take on it.

Someone should tell the Vatican that we in the USA have a Right to Bare Arms.

They were in the USA? How strange.

"Someone should tell the Vatican that we in the USA have a Right to Bare Arms."

Darn, I wish I had said that.

This is the ridiculous Newsweek article-about how Obama "better represents" American Catholics than the Pope- to which Dan is probably refering:

www.newsweek.com/id/205961

And the Newsweek article was written by a Kennedy offspring--who could not get elected as governor in reliably Dem MD. Dem Catholics are trying to own CiV for their own agenda. Look out. Will non-Catholic Dems like this, promoting of a Catholic agenda?

Pres. & Mrs. G.W. Bush on the other hand showed respect for the Church's rule and received a blessing with their arms folded.

Isn't one of Bush's brothers a convert to the Faith? If so, then President Bush probably knew what was expected of him.

I doubt the Clintons meant any offence. It was probably genuine cluelessness. But you'd think that out of their dozens of handlers, someone would have at least found out about this and clued them in.

According to this article from the Catholic News Agency, Obama contacted St. Jude Shops because he wanted to give the pope an antique chalice. The president of St. Jude suggested this more appropriate gift.

Mark S. (not Shea), yes Jeb Bush (former governor of Florida) is a Catholic convert. They did a good story on him and his wife in Faith and Family mag a few years ago.

Although one would think that after spending four years at a Catholic university, Clinton would have known what was expected of him, too.

Then again, it WAS Georgetown ...
