I think the review in First Things was by a Protestant. Not totally positive, but well-reasoned and fair. Raised some legitimate criticisms. (I'm Catholic and a PBXVI fan, btw.)

Well, this Evangelical is in the midst of the book and has found it very good so far. I suppose it's possible that the main character dies at the end, but they'll probably find a way to bring him back for a sequel (they're a bit squirrelly on the date for this sequel, though)

Here's mine for what it's worth:

I'm still Anglican, and I love it (haven't finished it yet). Read the review in First Things, and thought it was more than a bit harsh - in the "I don't like the book because I wouldn't have written it that way" vein.

Here's a review by a self-identified Protestant pastor.

Yeah, I wondered why the First Things review was looking so hard for things to criticize... then I saw at the end that the writer of the review has his own book coming out on the same subject and thought "That's why."

Carl has some posts up at www.insightscoop.typepad.com that by some Protestant thinkers.
