"Most of all, Ponnuru makes the point that abortion is a winning issue for the GOP..."
How so?

I've always said this too. That's because the majority of this "proc-choice" country STILL want limits on abortion. Heck, even abortion supporters don't use the word abortion.
Look at what the pro-abortion Democrats (and Rudy) try to push: Legalized Partial Birth Abortion (> 60% of voters against PBA) and federal spending for abortion (again, unpopular with voters). Those are EXTREME views. And the proaborts fight things like Parental Notification, Spousal Notification and waiting periods; which are all reasonable to most Americans, so AGAIN they come off as EXTREMISTS.

Pavel,
It's a winning issue because 70% of the 12-13% of voters who rate abortion as a non-negotiable issue are pro life. And they are among the most loyal voters. That translates into a seven milion plus vote advantage in a presidential election on that one issue.

Can you clarify who the "Mammon First Crowd" consists of with respect to Rudy? -- A lot of Catholics have stood up and said no to Rudy since the inception of his campaign.

I would guess he's referring to Rockefeller Republicans - conservative on business and military issues, softer on social issues.
