As a poor speller, I hate to point out that your spelling of the John Paul II's surname is wrong. It was Wojtyla.

This is not to criticize the article which had an interesting insight.

A good post. Something I have been complaining about for some time --to little avail-- among Catholic J&P activists (and I live in a rich environment, in that regard): the craven need for validation by and the willingness to form casual alliances with persons and ideas inimical to the Christian project per se. The warning, "lie down with dogs and you get up with fleas" falls upon deaf ears. There is no practical explanation for it; one must look to psychopathology --or worse, pnuemapathology-- for the answer.

Very rich insights. And are we drawing nearer to the Final Confrontation?

I was under the impression though that Khatami is one of the more liberal clerics in Iran - not that I'm well-informed about Iran or Shiism.
