Is that Stanley L. Jaki he's quoting, about science being stillborn in cultures which embrace the myth of the eternal return? I believe that's the interesting thesis of Jaki's _The Savior of Science_

What I particularly like is when a story refers outside to an epic or piece of history, which in turn gives the story a greater meaning. (hmmm... I probably didn't state that very well).

The voyage of discovery in this case leads to "The Battle of Malden."
